Seriously, how many AR15s does one need?
What would be a good number to start with? Let's see 1 M4 1 A2 20" 1 A4gery 1 SP1 Carbine 1 9mm AR Carbine 1 SAMR Clone That is 6. What should be the goal? Max |
I own:
20" A3 14.5 w/perm F/S 20" A0/SP1 I would like to build a XM177 look-a-like after that I think I am done except for replacement parts or enhancements. |
One of each model/style and enough spare parts to build many more.
I'd say that 5-10 would allow most people to have all the combinations they want without swapping uppers.
The must have ARs.
Early M16 clone Midlength SHTF gun Pistol cal for suppressed use short carbine for the wife 20" A2 varmint gitter ( optional ) |
I'm not certain how many AR15s would be enough.
I have 8 of them and I know that is not even close to being enough. viator |
This is purely a personal opinion type of question. For me, I would say 3-4 is enough.
Let's just say, since watching all this BS going on about N.O. I have re-evaluated how many I am gonna have based on space issues if I have to leave the area.
The SUV only holds so much family, pets, family articles, firearms, ammo, etc. |
At 10 I'm still gathering more parts.
1 SBR 5 Carbeans 4 Rifles Danny |
#1 Colt MT 6700
#2 Bushy M4 A3 #3 Bushy Dissipator #4 Oly/Glock 9mm Thats it for now . . . Gotta feed my .308 habit for a while |
Fear the man who only owns one rifle, odds are he has mastered that rifle.
THis is pretty much my current opinion. I am cutting the size of my collection down to a reasonable size but upgrading the quality of the firearms in it. I currently have three AR's and one lower, For our situation (family size) three to four would be the number for a bugout. Current Ar's Bushy M4gery 16" Bushy USMC A4 clone Busy 14.5 M4gery |
I cant honestly answer this one yet, I have 8 20"ers alone and still no SP1
Dammit anyhow, I remembered the early M16 clone but forgot all about the XM177
I guess I aint done yet I might also need a 7.5" SBR in .45acp if Cav would hurry up and make that billet lower |
For bugout I would grab what's needed and leave the rest .In a bugin situation you may have family members or neighbors that need help. I have the problem of being over prepared and not under prepared |

So far this is were it all stands
Bush M4 izzy Bush A3 20" STAG M4(1st build) Lower receiver and a few parts ordered this week for another project But I still want to do the following. M16A1/SP1 11.5+5.5 CARBINE .458 socom .50 Beowulf SBR 11.5 SPR type rifle Recon(16")carbine And not exactly in that order. |
I had 2 and another built lower, so 2 1/2. It's not enough.
I'm thinking if I had 5 I would be satisfied. |
A minimum of 3:
Shorty. 20". 9mm. I've had as many as 24 at one time, so I'm considering 3 to be the bare minimum (don't know if I could do it though). |
I really don't know how many I have, 20+ I guess.
Everytime I go to thin the herd and start evaluating them I just can't pick the victims. Denny<-----BRD victim and lovin' it |
I've had three at one time in the past.
LW CAR 20" Gov't A2 20" A2 HBAR Currently I have a M16A2 clone, 16" M4gery and a work in progress middy recon. I figure about 8 should be enough. CAR X 2 MID X 2 SPR X 2 SP1/ A1 A2 20" Gov't With a bad case of BRD, a lot more. |

You should have added ( never enough ) as a option.
I have seven and want more |
Enuff to arm all shooters in your house and maybe a couple trust-worthy neighbors or friends....
How many does one need?
Two: A rifle and a carbine. Maybe even one with two uppers. However, that is certainly not enough for me...or anyone would join this forum. |
I have 5 not counting my wifes Carbon model#4.I have a 14.5HBAR/Phantom 1/9 carbine,14.5/phantom M4 profile 1/7 carbine..both A2s.A flat top 1/7 M4 profile 14.5/pahntom...My M4A1 clone. An A1 16" HBAR beater carbine..for others to shoot and learn on.And an A2 full size 20"1/9 HBAR...all Bushmasters including the 2 1/7 barrels thanks to Legal Transfers...lucky meI think Im gonna do an A2 with 1/7 govt profile that will make 6.And turn the 20" HBAR into a flat top to make an SPR rifle.
I have 4 completed for now, with two extra lowers. All Bushmaster.
20" govt profile a3 "A4gery" 16" lightweight a3 16" m4 dissipator a3 14.5" m4 a3 next to be built: 11.5" SBR +SD 18-20" precision rifle |
The more black rifles the better. The question is how well can you shoot all of em?
Back in 1961 General LeMay was looking to buy 80,000 AR-15 rifles. I think that is a nice round number.
If I had the money, I'd have 20 +. I probably will some day too. These are the configurations I'd like to have.
Basic M4gery. 6.8 M4gery with some add on goodies. Piston driven M4gery SPR RECCE. Basic Mid Length. Dissy "tactical" goody mid length. 9mm suppressed SBR. Suppressed .22LR. Original M16 clone. M16A2 clone. A4gery. .458 SOCOM rifle. .50 Beowulf rifle. 20" Tack driver 20" rifle with add on goodies. 11.5" rifle. An all original SP1. CAR clone. 24" varmint rig. 7.62x39 rifle. LMT MRP rifle. Colt LEO 6920. KAC SR15 Match rifle. AR10 carbine. AR10 tack driver. SR25 Mk11. A space gun of some sort. And probably alot more. This is also not counting any M16 configurations I'd like to have some day. Add in a few more Dissy's, and maybe a .45ACP rifle too. For the little extra money, I'd rather every upper be mated to it's own lower too. So I'm hoping to win the lottery tonight. If not, I'll just have to wait a few years to get a decent collection going. |
I voted for 3-4. I peersonally think 3 is where it is at:
1x 16" with a 2X Compact ACOG (everyday use) 1x 18" with a 1.25-4X Accupoint (for 3 gun) 1x 20" with a 4X ACOG (for mid-range) Any chance of 98 cents change? |
I'll have 4 when I'm done building: 20" HBAR 16" midlength SBR Pistol |
Enough ! Enough !! There is NEVER ENOUGH!!! Those with the most toys win !!!!
The anwser to the ultimate question of life the universe and how many Ar15s are enough is 42.
You should have one for every adult that can shoot in your family. I'm not there yet but I'm getting close.
I go for every person that can shoot in your household. For me, that number is 2. That's right, I only need two. I only want two. I will end up with 3 (because I'm buying one that isn't ideal at first just to get my feet wet, then I'll build what I really want, pending funds). Instead of arming some close buddies with ARs I'd do so with a .308 bolt rifle or battle rifle and a 12g. shotgun. Reason being - scavenging different types of ammunition is a no-brainer, you won't always find .223, but if you have .223, .308, and 12g, chance are you'll find at least one. Someone should throw an AK into the mix just in case we stumble upon 7.62S!

I won't be happy until I own each and every AR-15 in the world.
same here. I can't show enough love to them to warrant having duplicates. Plus I have a growing 1911 'tumor'.... |
