I have a buddy with a Stainless Steel bull barrel and he wanted to know what he can do to darken it so I told him I would ask here.
What's the best thing to use?

Thanks.

Darken like black .... or darken like dull the reflective finish of a SS?

KG Coatings www.kgcoatings.com/index.html

Powder coatings that protect as well as darken... or bead blast which leaves a stainless barrel a dull grey.

There are paints but i am not familiar with them.

Aluma-Hyde II worked great on my MRP barrel:

Cleaned it, degreased it, rinsed with isopropyl alcohol, dried.
Applied per directions, then let sit for 3 days above 70F.

+1 this is the real deal, hands down best true mil-spec finish on earth.

It's the spec finish on the FBI's new 45's, and the who's who of spec ops.  Their real business is putting this stuff on submarines, so they are usually a little busy.  Last rifle I had done was $200 and a 6 month wait, worth every penny. Please be kind to Walter, this is a major gov'ment contractor providing true mil-tech to the little guys.

call me nigardly, but your could just use black engine paint, and then when it starts wearing off, put some more on.  That is if you are just looking to make it not so  noticable.  But hey, if you go $200 and 6 months, go for it.
