This has probably been covered before, but what do you guys keep in VLTOR storage tubes?

Currently, I have 4 Surefire batteries in mine (plus 2 in my Tango Down grip, for a total of 6), and am trying to figure out what else to put in there.

My first thoughts are to get a small plastic bag and put a spare firing pin, cam pin, and retaining pin for the firing pin.

Any other thoughts?

Well, maybe some batteries... No, just porn.

In all seriousness. The the weak links in an AR is #1 the bolt cracking at the cam pin hole and #2 lost extractor/ extractor springs.

I think cleaning rod sections for a stuck case and batteries are the best choices if I were to carry anything extra.

If you put only batteries in there, some empty space remains.

Without filling that space, the batteries will move around longitudinally in the tube and rattle.

So I stuffed some wadded up paper in there to fix this.

But now that you mention it, a wadded up picture of a really hot chick would be an even better idea.  Now whos pic to put in there??  So many chicks, so little space.......

foam ear plugs is a really good idea......never thought of that.

My AR has the Vltor tubes (I'll get around to ordering the extended ones someday), G27 Pistol Grip storage compartment, and the Tango Down Vert Grip storage compartment.

I have more storage space in my gun that I do my house.  I also don't want to weigh it down too much.

I figure a bolt & extraction tool is a good idea.  Surefire 123's are a good idea.  Aimpoint/EoTech batteries are a good idea.  Foam earplugs is a GREAT idea.

Oh...I almost forgot....

You can get a lens pen in there If you cut the pocket clip off and trim the vltor cap a little.

LOL...well well well

I stand by the Smarties dammit.  They would technically fit.  Can't have a little fun on the boards amid some serious discussion?  I think some of you may have your Marpat Boonies pulled too tight around your ears.

I did learn something on this thread, two things actually.  One is that foam ear plugs is a great idea.  I'm going to add some today.

Extractor spring, cotter pin (easy to loose in the field).  I believe a firing pin would fit, but I don´t think that broken firing pins are a huge concern.  Loss is probably more of a problem.

Why do you need an AR-15?  Why don't you go play with your fucking BB gun?

Many of us who post here are quite serious about having the tools to defend our lives, our property, and our Freedom.   This means having at least one good fighting rifle that you can grab, along with the rest of your gear, when the SHTF.

This requires getting the best equipment available, making sure it functions under all conditions, with appropriate spare parts.

Having a light on a rifle is valuable for many situations.  The batteries for most of the lights will only run for an hour, so it's a good idea to have several spares so you can swap them out.  6 is a good number since Surefire lights run on either 2 or 3 batteries, which means you can either run your light for 2 hours or 3 hours, depending on which light you have.

If you have a problem with folks having useful tools, you need to be posting on a paintball forum.

Just viewed the thread of 8 cheerleaders shooting, if your filling up your stocks with useful things you'll need where ever it is your going.
I'm sure there is room for a photo of some hot chicks with guns.. or your loved ones.

Some chapstick with SPF since I'm an easy burner, surrounded by a few earplugs, and surefires in the other.

Atleast thats my plan.  If the SHTF, chapstick is something I wouldn't mind having with me.  I cannot think of too many things that are more bothersome/annoying than needing chapstick, and not having it.

Okay - I've been too lazy to try it out so (like Hokie) I'll ask if anyone has tried to fit a spare bolt in the long version yet?  If not, I'll get off my dead ass, open the safe, and tear into it to see.

A spare bolt will not fit in the VLTOR tube.  It's diameter is slightly too large.

However, I do see a way of putting a spare bolt on your VLTOR stock.  The stock has lots of holes in it, so you can run a screw through one of the holes in stock, and thru the hole in the spare bolt, and then use a washer and nut to hold it on.

It's not perfect, since your spare bolt is exposed to the elements, but it's better than not having a spare around.

Well, not a cleaning kit.  I'm still waiting on the dude who posted about a modified kit that he made to fit, to make some kits.  Haven't heard of them since.

If your storing batteries, rolling them up in a couple hundred dollar bills before you drop them in the tube might come in handy  for something unexpected down the road.

+1

I have a range bag where this stuff is rolling around somewhere and it will take me a good 20 minutes to find it IF I search flat-out!  (That ACE skelotonized stock isn't looking so smart now...).  I would also think about a spare take down pin as I've seen one lose it's detent spring/ball assembly and that ended that rifle's day.

BTW, a little beef jerky is still a good idea: it can keep you going when dinner is a ways off!
