I just finished my post sunset AR carbine and I am having a problem.

The bolt will not go back far enough for the hold-open to engage. I have tried mags an engaging it maually with no success.

I replaced the fixed stock with an M4 stock. Could the problem lie in the stock replacement???? I have never had this problem before.

Thanks,

Did you replace the buffer and spring?

Yep. I replaced the stock, buffer, tube, and spring. The bolt is about 1/8" from opening far enough.

Let me get this straight - will the bolt and carrier group not physically move back far enough to lock back?

Nope, I have the carbine buffer laying here next to the rifle buffer.

The springs are the same length though.
How much different should the length of the springs be?

My rifle and carbine/collapsible spring is approx the same length.

Have you tried the bolt just in the upper and just in the lower without teh spring to see if it has any interference with the hammer?

How much difference should there be in the spring lengths?

Can a rifle spring be cut to a carbine length?

Or check that the gas key is staked down correctly and not binding on the rear of the carry handle.
