Do you have weld marks at TDC 12:00 o'clock & BDC 6:00 o'clock?

I have a 14.5" BBL with an AK brake "permanently affixed." I am interested in replacing it with a vortex. I am planning to silver solder the Vortex on. I seem to recall someone telling me that the AK brake is mostly threaded on, blind pinned, and welded over. I can't definitively locate the pin hole.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated. |

14.5 inch barrels have threads. 16 inch barrels have plain muzzles.
If you see the pin hoing through horizontally through the bottom half of the brake, then you have a plain muzzle. If it looks like a nice clean job, with no pins, then look at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. You should see to small dicolorations where a pin was set then welded over and refinished. This means you have a threaded muzzle. |

That would explain it. I bought one of the first BM 14.5" M4 barrels with an AK brake. KKF took it off and put on a long A2 style flash hider. It was definitely threaded. Never owned any BM 16" M4 barrels. |

I bought a 16 inch M4 upper from the EE. Came with a Mini Y pinned on (pins exposed). Sent it directly to Kurt and he removed the mini Y and pressed on a fake flash hider keepin the 16 inch length but adding something to the bare muzzle. Now that I have a pre ban, I was contemplating sending that upper down to him to cut down to 11.5 inches and threading the muzzle. I bought a pre ban configured M4 upper that sits on my preban now so I was thinking of a CAR styled upper. Plus with the 11.5 barrel, I wouldn't need a bayo lug anyways. |

Thanks guys. I just successfuly removed my AK brake without damaging the threads. The Vortex went right on. Now for the silver solder...

It'd just be something to do with this extra Postban abortion of an upper I have. Besides, that upper would be for some serious CQB where the velocities would be fine. |

How many pins in the AK brake? Are the pins at 12:00 and 6:00 or one or the other? Thanks

my bushy 14.5 ak has pins (discolored spots) that appear to be at 3:00 and 9:00...what's up with that?...most say they are at 6 and 12. I am guessing threaded barrel...still gotta git rid of that awful brake.

mine were at 3 and 9 positions, grind out the pins, unscrew the brqake, and use silver solder paste to solder the phantom on
