does the Sp1 have a serration on the bolt, even when it has no forward assist, I have been told that some did. I just dont understand why. Does anybody know when the forward assist was adopted? thanks

Forward assist was adopted in 1967

Yes, SP1 has serrations on carrier, but no FA. At least the 2 I owned (18000, 129000) did. FA was never adopted on original SP1 (R6000, R6001).

My SP1 has them but no FA. sn SP20xxx. Early 1972.

EDIT to add: A lot of m-16 parts were mixed with the AR-15s. Some bought 15s with 16 hammers and
triggers and had to change the parts out.

My 3 digit #6xx SP1 1964? I believe has a smooth carrier.  My 1969 has the serrations.  No SP1 has FA.  I think when the XM16E1 came out with the FA and the Air Force gave the OK to use serrated carriers in their M16's (without FA, of course!) Colt simply used modified carriers from the M16 production line.

Exactly right.  Once the Air Force approved the use of serrated carriers, there was simply no reason to produce any smooth ones, so the vast majority of SP1s came with serrates pieces as well.

I have seen both smooth and serrated carriers, but it has been a LONG time since I saw a smooth one.
