Would you be willing to be allowed one gun of any type but only one gun for self protection, however can go anywhere with you legally.

Would you?

In a word, NO!  In two words HELL NO!  No one gun can do all tasks.  I couldn't even get by with one gun of each type.  I'd need at least 2 pistols and at least 4 rifles, and at least 1 shotgun.  One gun...How boring!

Oh no, not another person asking the age old stupid question. Why in the h*ll would I allow myself to be put in the position where someone else tells me that I can only have one gun? WTF would anyone go along with that?

NO gun can do it all.

Hey was just a question, Your told you can't do alot of things by the goverment. And the AR can do just about anything. Wouldn't be a limit to parts etc.

"And the AR can do just about anything."

Well let's see...

The AR can't conceal very well, so it couldn't replace my 1911 and my snub nose .38.
The AR can't reliably take out large and dangerous game very well, so it couldn't replace my large caliber hunting rifles.
The AR can't fire shotgun shells, thus making it useless for virtually any kind of bird hunting or sporting clay shooting, so it can't replace my Remingon 1187.
The AR (at least the AR15) can't hit with any authority at 1000 yards, so it couldn't replace my Remington 700 based sniper rifle.
A .223 is a bit much for squirrels and such so it couldn't replace my Ruger 10-22.
But the AR is good for what it was designed to do, so let's leave it in its own little niche and keep the rest of our guns for the rest of the jobs the AR doesn't do very well.
One gun?  Are you crazy?

Now if you wanted to ask "If you had to high tail it to the woods and could only take one gun, what would it be?" then we could talk. But to limit my self to only being able to own one gun just wouldn't do.  I need a pistol to fullfill my CCW, a shotgun for hunting small game like rabbits and doves and at least one rifle to hunt deer and hogs.  I guess if I could just take one gun it'd be my Remington 870 Express Mag. 20Ga.  Shells are smaller then a 12Ga so I could carrier more.  It'll work excellent on small game and with a slug could take deer at close range.  I'd have to have at least one extra bbl. to go with it, a 20" rifle sighted smooth bore for slug shooting but that would be the one if I could only have one.  I sure hope it never comes down to that or you'll have one sad TN.Frank on your hands.

A AR as your base can fire almost and caliber, so it could take down large game.

It is extremely concelable with a 7in barrel.

About shotgun shells I am not sure about that but I bet one day you will have a upper for at least .410

I said gun, but like I said no limit to parts etc. So all the uppers you want.

Basically NO!

But otherwise give me a gun like was used in ALIENS. A FullAuto 10mm with AP ammo and a 30mm grenade launcher. ( And enough bandoleers that I have a hard time standing... )

"It is extremely concelable with a 7in barrel."

Ummm...no it's not.

A S&W 5 shot snub nose J frame is extremely concealable.  A 7" AR is not even half as concealable as a 6 1/2" N frame .44 Magnum, and that is not saying much because only Dirty Harry can conceal one of those and even that is only in the movies.

I guess you think Tubbs had that sawed of shotgun under his buttoned up double breasted suit coat all the time on Miami Vice too.

I like ARs a lot, but they are not nearly as versatile as some would have you believe.  Just because it can be modified to do something does not mean it can do it well.  Why do you think a mechanic has a tool box as big as a chest of drawers full of tools instead of only a Gerber Multiplyer or a Swiss Army Knife?

With all due respect....Don't think small!!!! Get one of those old T131 280mm artillery pieces that fired the 15 kiloton nuclear shell. Should be effective against everything from prairie dogs to bear to liberals!

Limited ownership is really pointless. A person can only aim an shoot well one gun at the time. So what would be the reason to limit how many he owned?

Kinda always wanted a turret mounted 16" naval gun.Not very concealable, but good out to around 150 miles or so with sabot rounds.Gonna want around 10,000 rounds of ammo, too.HE and AP.Think it'll reach Cuba from here?

If I had to only have one gun but could carry it anywhere? Wouldn't want to, but if I had to, it would be a tough choice between an M60E4 or an Mp5/10.
