I am looking for movie titles and particular scenes that show tactically sound use/manipulation of long guns, shotguns and pistols. Example. Blackhawk down has a scene where a roll out from a building corner is used very well. Heat has a great M-16 emergency reload scene.  ANY HELP WILL BE GREAT.

THANKS FOR THE HELP IN ADVANCE

The new "content correct" movie scenes and teaching the Y generation to stay alive in LE. Any scene that has a good sound tactical message will also be appreciated

Here are a few of my favorites in addition to Heat and Blackhawk Down.

I can't say too much for the movie (plot), but check out Way of the Gun.  Most of the gun handling is with .45's and shotguns, but there is a rifle or two in there.  They seem to use pretty sound reloads, cover, and even a bounding overwatch-type retreat...wow!!

I'd also check out Tears of the Sun.  There has been some problems pointed out with the plot and some of the authenticity of the actions of the Seals in the movie (Bruce Willis supposedly has his Aimpoint on backwards), but I still find it a pretty good watch.

Bravo Two Zero has some great fire and manuever scenes.  It's a pretty good movie over all, but I found the shooting sequences really interesting.

*pauses to look through the movie collection*

Band of Brothers shows some pretty sound tactics and gunplay, but it is set in World War II, so you won't see any of the more modern weapons.

Can't remember much about it right now, but you might check out We Were Soldiers as well.  IIRC, it was pretty accurate.

Hope this helps,
Stephen

The only good thing about Way of the Gun was the shooting but all of the shooting scenes were done by the directors brother who was a former Navy Seal.  To me it made the main characters seem like ex military losers but in fact they were supposed to be untrained street thugs and that actually made the movie much different than it should have been.

Way of the Gun and Heat are the best examples you could find of what you are looking for.

There was a movie about a renegade SWAT team where the leader was the T1000 from Terinator 2.  I believe a LAPD SWAT instructor was the the advisor on the shooting scenes.  Does anyone know the name of that movie?  The plot was even worse than Way of the Gun but it had kind of cool shooting scenes.

The name of that movie was "Rouge Force."  It has a pretty good opening scene where they raid a porn mansion.  There is also a good sniping scene with a shooter and spotter.

Also have you looked into Rambo? [LOL] just kidding.

Dog Soldiers is another B movie in which they handled firearms pretty well. Might need second opinions on this one though.

Bruce Willis' Aimpoint was not on backwards in Tears, but his GG&G Cantilever mount was. I have been told that this is how some folks actually mount them so they do not catch on brush etc. Have no idea how true it is but it did make sense.

Also, Bruce Willis is a lefty, and oddly enough, you can not mount the Aimpoint with the switch on the left on a GG&G Cantilver mount... that is unless you mount it backwards. Strange but true.

As ofr movies, you all covered the ones I like best. Only thing I hated about Way of the Gun is that the guy only had one magazine for the FAL in the last seen, but he must have had about 50 pistol mags? WTF is with that! [;)]

It was a Galil and he had 2 magazines.  Ever try to find Galil magazines in  a small town?  Much easier to find 1911 mags.

SWAT was one of the most unrealistic shooting movies out there.  Might as well go for Matrix.  I mean flips during range practice???  Sub .5 MOA 2000 yard 50 BMG shots on a moving target????  Gang bangers with RPGs????

Proof of Life has a superb scene at the end of the film.  One of the most authentic ones I've ever laid eyes on.  Highly recommended.

DevL: In SWAT, I liked when Samuel L. Jackson was derisive on the young officer for flipping and rolling while shooting. :)

For me, a good movie is where the weapons and techinques are not flatly consistent between everyone, but vary to match the characters. SWAT and SpecOps would have clean weapons-handling and manuevers, and the thugs don't, and everyone else is inbetween according to character.  I also like when the guns reflect the character.

I liked Way of the Gun because the old guys had revolvers ( often carried two ) and shotguns and they outsmarted the young punks with the automatics.  I'd think that the two anti-heros in WotG didn't show any trick they couldn't have learned from a movie or book and practiced.

New-ArGuy,

I found this picture on ARFCom a while ago,  and saved it 'cause I'm a Tears of the Sun fan. What puzzles me is Willis' character goes use a GGG cantilever mount, and it is mounted 180 degrees from normal position, on his RAS. The strange thing about the pic is, it seems the AIMPOINT is on backwards in the mount too! Can you verify? How the hell does that work? (I'm thinking it was a mistake that no one caught during the filming of a non-shooting scene).

In that picture, the Aimpoint is most definitely backwards, no question about it.

The blockish part of the sight with the on/off controls and the windage & elevation knobs are in the rear of the sight.

Also, his knife handle looks bent like it is a rubber knife, do any of you see that or is it just me???

Omega_556:

I have seen real knives where the handle is designed to follow the curve of the hand, so I am assuming that knife is of the same style.

While it's not really applicable, since its a period piece, I like the final confrontation in LA Confidential alot.

I really think most of the good ones have been mentioned, unless you count John Woo ;). Thats a sad state of affairs, huh? 400,000 uberviolent shoot 'em up movies and only a 1/2dozen that actually make any sense.

Folks thanks for the work. I am in review process as we speak. Keeping training interesting is important. Especially since most folks who carry guns for a living every day in LE don't have that much interest in them.

Yeah, it sure is. I imagine the reason some folks think it is not on backwards is because it was on correct in many other scenes.

I was watching some junk movie the other night (ICE-T was in it), and the BG had a PPK in one scene, and next scene it was a Beretta 92.

There is a scene in Full Metal Jacket, near the middle, where the Marines are going into the city with tanks that shows excellent use of leapfrogging cover and manuver.  An Army Ranger I know was very impressed when he saw that scene and how well it was done.

RONIN!

This little-known movie never made it big in theatres when it was released in 1998 but is probably one of my favorite action movies of all time.  It stars Bob DeNiro, Jean Reno, Jonathan Pryce, Sean Bean, and Stellan Skaarsgard, all huge names.

Your local video store will have it.

There is a scene in the middle where there is some urban combat in Nice, France.  Looks to be a very clever ambush and very co-ordinated fighting of a much smaller force against a larger convoy.  A former British SAS operative coordinated those scenes (IIRC) and while I don't know jack about Urban Combat, it is a realllly good movie and you all ought to watch it this weekend.  In fact, I'm going to go watch it with the girlfriend and her parents tonight, as none of them have seen it.

Tactical pistol.....hmmmmmmm.........I still keep comin' back to Don Johnson in the "Miami Vice" series. I have yet to see any 'tube dicks' that could hold a candle to his technical approach. Textbook tactical for it's day.

A friend worked for LASD at their range. Andy McNab did the weapons training for the actors for the movie HEAT. Just an FYI
