Now what would you do with it? What AR would you build? First of let me set a few rules.
1. you must start of with a new lower (one you don't already own)
2.  All parts must be purchased out of that 900 bucks
3.  You do not need to build a complete gun, but you do need to spend all 900 bucks

Mega stripped lower    $89
Shipping and FFL transfer     $30
J and T postban CAR Kit (A3) $449.95
OKO Red dot sight            $150
(assuming you have your C&R or FFL at Brownell's)
SC-3 Cover for OKO            $53
GG&G flip up rear sight      $124

I'm at $895.95

If you want to go with a weaver mount Kobra sight, you could get the GG$G vertical foregrip, and still be under $900

If you aren't married to the chrome barrel idea, figure $550 for the parts kit (A3) and receiver.

From there it is a matter of sight/ optics and a muzzle break.  I would buy the preban kit and do the MB myself, so that is only $30 ($580).

$120 or so for the BUIS leaves $200 for optics.

A OKO would run $150 plus another $50 for the cover, and that would call it at about $900.

Another option is $550 for kit & lower, leaving a lot for ammo and mags.

Over the week-end I very rapidly built a pre-ban AR for $850 !!  Bought a pre-ban Oly with Stop-Sign- Lower, fluted barrel with flash suppressor, old but (temporarily) serviceable Weaver Scope, Harris Bipod, two GI mags and an assault rifle bag.

That leaves $50 to build some ammo.

(Not trying to be a wise guy but there's more than one way to get to a $900 AR.  My way required about a month of careful shopping and a bit of luck.)

jzdziarski,

I got a preban OLY (stopsign) complete NIB unfired CAR15 last year for $750.  The deals are out there, you have just got to look.  I don't think you'll ever see deals like that on the EE board, but they are out there.

This may change topic but... Isn't it true that a preban lower cannot be used to assemble a weapon that will be considered preban if assembling the weapon occurs after the ban, unless the lower was once part of a preban assembled weapon and all other parts then used are considered replacements? And if this is true I wonder where is everybody getting these preban lowers that once were part of a preban assembled weapon, but aren't anymore?

Damn! thems some long sentences!

Got the entire rifle/package above for $850 bucks at the Oklahoma City Gun Show this past weekend !!  First show I've been to in a loooong time where there were some actual deals.  In addition to the above:

Colt preban AR in 7.62X39 - 98% - $1200
Bushmaster Carbine - preban - 95% - $1150
SAR-2 - 99% - RSA trigger - AK-74 brake PSO Scope - 3 mags with pouch and cleaning kit - $350

Yeah, I bought the SAR-2.  (I was saved from buying the Bushmaster because I was out of cash and the guy wouldn't take a check.)
