I'm thinking of changing the stock on my 16" AR to either an A1 or a stubby stock.  I don't know which is better though.  I was checking out Bushmasters website and cant seem to find an A1 stock there.  Do they make one?  The only one I could find is the A2 and stubby stock which seems really short.  I have in the past found the A1 to be really comfortable.  Does anyone have a picture they could share with the stubby on there AR?  Which would be more advisable, A1 or the stubby?  Or should I just stick with the A2 stock and forget about it.  Thanks

I like the A1 on mine.  I got it from Fulton.  They also have the stubby, and they sell adjustable butt-plates that make them fairly versatile.  Find them here:

A pic of the stubby with the adj. plate is here:

Cavalry Arms also has their own A1 stocks in a rainbow of fruit flavors here:

I've used the A1, the stubby, the stubby with 1" spacer, and the Stubby with the adjustable buttplate.

BY FAR I prefer the A1, my 2nd choice would be the stubby with the adjustable buttplate.  The only reason for the adjustable buttplate is if you have different shooters use the rifle that are well below average in stature.

Here is some info on use of the buttplate http://groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite/adjustablebuttplatereview.msnw

I too prefer the A1. You can get used, but in good condition M16A1 sets from Northridge for $20/set. Great for camo projects. Set includes stock, grip, and triangular handguards. If you go the A1 route, make sure you get a A1 stock screw. They are shorter than the A2 screw. You can cut the A2 screw if you want. If you put the A2 screw in the A1 stock, it will look at first like it will work, but you will have feeding malfunctions and it wont feed from a locked back bolt using the bolt release.

Hey Guys,

Good info.  I'm also thinking about going A1 since I'm a shorty myself.  I was looking at all the different parts on the Northridge site and wondering which to get.  I'm really only interested in the buttstock by itself.

I think this is what I need:

M16A1 Buttstock with Trapdoor
Used Good Condition  $14.95  SN-622

My question is, do I also need the buffer, spring and assembly or will the existing one from my A2 buttstock work?

Thanks!

Drivie

Go with the A1. Stubby is too short for everyday work. I built a "youth" rifle for my kids with a stubby stock and a Oly featherweight 16" upper. Very light and short. Problen is, kids outgrew it in no time. I switched to A1 stock and they love it. AIRBORNE!

I agree the A1 is the way to go (I tried the stubby for awhile but it was a bit too short.)
CavArms has NEW A1 length buttstocks various colors.

Edited to add link.

The receiver extension, buffer and spring are the same.  You will need a new A1 upper screw (its 5/8" shorter than the A2 upper screw) and you won't need the spacer.
