Would Nosler CC 168s at 2600 fps hold out to 1000 yards?
Or would any 168s? |

FWIW - Shooting here on the east coast at Quantico, with the density altitude being so low, the 168 SMKs don't perform past 800y. At 1,000, they are hitting the target sideways. 168s with a different bearing surface can make 1,000, but most people will just shoot 175s. YMMV

I shoot 155s out to 1000 yards. 34 moa comeup from 100 zero. no problem on the not too windy days.

JBM shows Bergers, Hornady ELD, and Sierra TMK making it to 900yds between 1200-1300fps. Their shapes ought to let them cruise through transonic to 1000yds okay.

All 168s are not the same. The SMK gave them a bad name. The 168 ELDs will easily do 1000 and then some. Have shot them past that in matches. Just need to pick the right 168.
My 168 ELDs are factory ammo leaving the barrel at 2750fps and at about 1250fps at 1000 and 1150fps at around 1100 yards. |

No data on the Nosler CCs, but apparently reports are they perform equally to the SKMs.
I have pushed some 168 SMK to roughly 980 yds. this fall with 2500 fps MV @ 2700 ft altitude. Beyond that they went unstable. So with 2600 fps. you might be lucky. I would give it a try, be it just for the learning effect. |

Rob,
You may have posted it in previous threads as you often do and I missed it, but what is your load for the 178's? I just ran out of Varget but got good results w several brands of brass fromm 42-43.5 grains. I have not tried the 168 ELD but plan to switch when I run out of 178's. The Hornady Superperformance 308 w 168 ELD advertises 2840 fps. It should be a good 1000 + load at even 100 fps less than that. Hace you tried reloading the 168 ELD or are you just usiing factory ammo? |

Have shot it out past 1000 and it held true. Have only shot the factory so far. I have not loaded the 168 ELD yet but have a bulk box getting delivered soon so I will be. I plan to start at about 44grns of Varget and work up at about .020" off the lands. |

Unless you're pushing the living hell out of them with a magnum, you're unlikely to get much expansion at all at 1000yrds with a .30 cal 168gr bullet with most hunting bullets. There are some like eld-x that are meant to expand at relatively low velocities but 1000 with a .308 pitching 168's is still a bit far to ensure expansion. If you need expansion at 1000 you better pick a magnum.
