I was talking to a family member who hunts deer (both white-tail and mule) in Washington state, and does not like the taste of deer, so when he bags one he usually gives the entire deer to a friend whose family loves eating deer.

Nothing goes to waste here, but I asked why he didn't sell some of the meat. He claimed he had seen something in a rule-book stating that it wasn't legal to sell. This seemed a little strange to me, so I did some searching and couldn't turn up any information.

Can anyone verify or contest this claim?

I don't know about elsewhere, but it is ILLEGAL to sell wild game meat here in Indiana.

It is illegal in Illinois as well. This rule can be usually found in your state's Hunter Regulations Digest which in my state can be picked up at any local Walmart, Kmart, etc.

It's pretty much illegal nationwide to sell harvested wild game. See, there was this little problem with market hunters way back when that just about wiped out quite a few species (deer, turkey) and did wipe out others (passenger pidgeon).

"Wild" game can be bought (like from Cabelas), but it's farm-raised and licensed.

As stated above, it is illegal in most states.

If it were legal, there would be dipshits running around all the time killing every deer they saw for an extra buck....no pun intended

Very illegal. Covered by the Lacy act as per the US Fish and Wild life service. My pops was a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation investigator, and for years he would go undercover and bust deer jackers selling venison to resturants in the city. He has some amazing stories. He was even on National Geographic once (he was blacked out and his voice was changed no one in school would beleive it was my dad)

trust me when i say this..
the state and federal authorities..BOTH...of them.
take the selling of wild game meat very seriously..

we are talking..
HK94 and Colt carbine seriousness, i even believe there was a M-14 that made a showing.

when i was young...very young..think under the drinking age.
i thought it was a honest way to make a spending money. i mean...who hasnt made 25-30 dollars here and there..

but things went south.
visits by LEO's...federal and state.
attorneys...
toss in a couple of office visits with a judge.

lets see..
there was an arson case and some drug issues out of it.. ( i had no part in that) but they wanted answers.

meat selling..has always been around..and will continue.
i never sold antlers..thats a whole different ball game.

if my dad had not fished with some very important people. charges would have been filed.

i've been clean ever since.

Holy crap Muddydog, that sucks man.

Selling animal parts is a big no-no. I know a game warden personally pretty good, and he was telling me about catching guys killing lots of bears to sell the gall bladder. The ones killing the bears are pieces of shit, and he busted a right good ring of them. BIG fines to be had.

Just don't do it, give it away to someone who wants it, and can use it-needy families are great.

we never sold a set of antlers..
granted this was 20 years ago..

we will see an END to pen raised deer in the next 10 years or so due to CWD.

That is what I understand muddydog, the game warden told us some crazy amounts. The hunters kill any bears they can, by baiting them up(which is illegal as hell in NC), then just cut out the gallbladder.

These same guys also had all kinds of hidden compartments in their truck...pretty tricky stuff.

It's a good thing you got out of your stuff though, that would have sucked a major one

Gall bladders are used as old school viagra. Koreans in NYC pay over 300 dollars a gram for the stuff. There was a gang of scumbags back in the late 80's that would run dogs all over New England killing bears. They would cut out the gall bladder and leave the animal lay. My old man ran undercover with them for a few years and they used to let him video tape the "hunts". They shoot a cub that couldn't have weighed more than 20 pounds full of arrows and you can hear it screaming. It was pretty fucked up. They all went to jail for a long time and they took all thier guns trucks and houses. There was even a few asian gang fatalites in NYC over gall bladder sales. Crazy world

i was told that one gall bladder would pay for 1 semester of my college.
i did 2 years of bear research and never once was a tempted.

you cannot..sell an item taken from an illegally taken animal. thats cuts a big hole in the plan, right there.

having said that. almost all states have controls or laws against selling antlers with the skull plates attached on wild deer. YMMV.

pen raised deer antlers are legal to sell with documentation. as are antler sets without the skull attachment. like a shed pair.

the last thing the states want is to get into a bidding war for $$$$ over legal deer antlers. that brings out bad apples.

the key to possom cop 101 is that alot of their regs are crisscrossed. 1 part would be legal in one provision. but illegal in a little known portion of a law elsewhere.
they have everything covered..for just sort of an emergency of illegal activity.

if you start selling antlers..and making yourself known about it.
they will hound you until something is found to their benefit.

It definitely had some ground shrinkage. I thought I was shooting a nice 3 1/2 or decent 4 1/2 year old buck and it ended up actually being a really good 2 1/2 or bad 3 1/2

Here in Washington a friend of mine ran into the game warden on the road prior to tagging his deer. Add to this the fact he was in a 2 pt (Western style meaning per side, not total) or better area and had shot a 2x1, but had somehow blown the forked antler off with his first shot. Game warden rightfully confiscated the deer and gave it to the local Indian tribe how legally sold it out of their resturaunt/casino. Not sure why the state of WA is providing the tribes with meat to sell, but it does happen.
