Snagged Panama last night (HP9SAM), which was really cool, because in my QTH 20M was total crap last night, with hardly any signals showing on the band scope.

The 20M band started dropping early for me last night, so I shut it all down at 10 PM. I did get a Guernsey QSO, so I was pleased with that. I don't normally turn on the radio in the mornings, but was awake around 7:30 EDT, so I decided to fire it up. I got not one but two Indonesian QSO's, and had two failed attempts where we couldn't quite get it done -- one in South Africa and the other in the Philippines.

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.
|
I haven't heard or seen much of anything the last couple of nights/mornings (swing shift kinda sucks). Even the OR and AZ stations that are usually S9+10 or more were completely buried in noise when I got home last night. Right now DX is anything east of the Rockies.

Finally heard my very first Japanese station (JG1HQA), but it was a big failure.
He started out low in the noise (33) while he was having a stateside QSO that I was listening to. Each QSO got louder and louder, so I had high hopes. By his last QSO, he was at a 54 or so for me. Then he dropped the bomb -- like Hiroshima -- and told his last QSO that it was 11PM and he had to go QRT so he could get up for work in the morning. Oh so close! |

Just heard someone on the Noontime Net mention a special event station for one of the Apollo missions. He said Apollo 11, but ARRL says Apollo 15 50th Anniv.
They said it was happening on 7.274, but I can't hear a thing. |

I got a card in today from a DXpedition to Desecheo Island, which is an uninhabited rock poking out of the Caribbean about 13 miles off the west coast of Puerto Rico.
What makes it unusual is that I made the QSO on December 30, 1992, or nearly 29 years ago ;) I've been going through old logs and finding some QSO's I really, really wish I had gotten cards for back then (some I sent and never got a response, others I just never sent). I can find email addresses for a few of them and have been writing and asking if they still have the logs available. Out of 8 or 10 emails I've gotten one response and that was from this DXpedition. The man said that he keeps his logs forever and he still had a few of the cards left from the DXpedition, so he was kind enough to send me one. I sent him a card on 07/28 and got my card today. Eight days round trip. You can't beat that kind of service. This same group is planning a DXpedition to Saint Paul Island (CY9C) and Sable Island (CY0C ) next year so keep an eye open for that one. They did Sable Island in 2013 and must have liked it enough to go back ;) |

I checked my logs and wrote back, "Yes! I did and Yes! I do need a card from that one!" so another envelope goes in the mail to him tomorrow. |

That is amazing! I just hope I don't have to wait that long for cards! LOL! I sent a guy a Paypal payment for a card last night and he thanked me when he saw it and told me it would be October before he could send it and asked if that was okay. October 2021 beats 2050.

View Quote Yes it does! At least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I've got one laying here now I need to mail, but I'm not in any real hurry since the destination only gets mail once a month. These slipped through in 1993 when I was getting out of radio. Not so much by choice but I had so many things screaming for time I didn't have time to deal with radio or sending card all over the world. I really regret it now since some of the ones I'd love to have now aren't available any more. DXpeditions that no longer have a QSL manager, individuals I can't find addresses for, etc. A couple are in countries that no longer exist. One that comes to mind is a contact I made in Sri Lanka. I'll never be able to replace that one. |

I listened to a couple of guys ragchew for quite a while last night. One was in Greenland and the other was in Bonaire Island. When they finished up and said 73, I could not raise either of them and the band noise level coincidentally got a lot higher.

I stayed up until after 1AM last night trying to get E51AA0. I already have one South Cook Islands station, but really wanted this guy because he logs via LOTW. He was down in the noise for me (he uses a dipole, too), but I could still hear him. All the west coast stations were blowing me out of the water since they were much closer to him. Damned Californians with their 3-hour earlier time zone.

View Quote I had a long-winded QSO tonight with a guy from Greenland (OX3AH) that just sort of fell into my lap. We had each other at 58. It's the only time I've ever heard Greenland. After our QSO, another guy called out to me, so I answered. As soon as I heard the call sign, I knew who it was, though he didn't know me. He lives less than 5 miles from me and is net control for our local 2M net (which I haven't checked into since April.) I couldn't believe we were pegging each others' S-meters! Usually I can barely hear anyone in my own state on 20M, let alone on pretty much the same road. He just got on HF today and I was his first QSO. |
