I had 5 cans of green beans that just expired. Nothing wrong with them, just didn't eat them up.

Thanksgiving potluck is at work today.

A little onion, some bacon, some butter,... they're awesome.

Expiration date is mostly for store use, so they know when to remove items from shelf by.

That stops people from claiming they just bought a 25 year old can of spam.

The 'Rule of thumb', and store labeling policy may have changed without me noticing, so I'm in for the discussion setting me straight.

ETA: All of the above except for tomato based stuffs.

They can tend to get a little metallic from the acidic nature of the product after several years.

I'm of the opinion that as long as the can isn't dented or damaged it will last decades.

I'm with the "forever unless the can is damaged" crowd.  More to the point, "about to expire" means nothing.  It isn't about to expire.

You guys haven't heard?  They found a way to genetically modify food so that it can now tell time.  They program in the expiration date and the second that date comes around BAMM, the food spoils.  Or not

More likely the advertising companies who do the can artwork give kick backs to the FDA to demand an expiration date.

More importantly, I rotated my oldest food out and used it for something I would have had to buy anyway.
