IMO - the serrations would be dependent on the actual tasks you are planning, and how often you can sharpen your knife. If you think the opportunity to sharpen will be very intermittent, or you're planning to cut lots of fibrous material (like rope) - then serrations may be a great choice for your knife. I don't own the ESEE (yet), but from reviews on the goobernet, their partial serrations are not difficult to sharpen (use 3/8" diameter hone), and are very functional for shaving bark or making fuzz sticks.

I say plain edge but I guess it comes down to personal preference.

I like plain edges because I don't do anything that requires a serrated edge. Even in the kitchen I rarely pull out the serrated steak knives because a normal knife can cut a steak just fine and I keep some of my favorite knives in the knife block in the kitchen just because I like using them for everyday cooking. |

Of the three I have purchased, all were combo edge. Two of those went to a couple of fellows serving in Afghanistan, and they specified that style.
I kept one, and found it unsuitable for my needs when camping/hiking. Sold it. |

Very intesting to see the opinions. I prefer a smooth edge on a primary survival knife too but I also find myself using my partially serated Kersaw pocket knife quite a bit for cutting things that the smooth blade seems to stuggle with. I guess as long as you have the tools to keep a smooth blade sharp it will always be a great tool but I am starting to think I like the partial serations and if I were ready to buy a new survival knife I think I would get the serated version:
 With that said, I think I am planning to go with the ESEE 6, slightly longer blade and slightly lighter . I have a hatchet in my preps for heavier chopping needs. |

Mine has smooth. I have never wished for serrations as it is razor sharp and cuts through everything like butter.
