Female Metro Officer Shot; Suspect Captured

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Nashville police officer was shot and critically injured early Friday while investigating a domestic disturbance call, and police said they captured a suspect after an interstate pursuit that ended when he crashed his car in West Tennessee.

Officer Danita Marsh, 30, was ambushed in her patrol car, shot several times and is in "very, very critical condition" at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, police spokesman Don Aaron said.

The suspect, identified as Willie Lee Lindsey, 47, launched a "surprise sneak attack" and shot Marsh as she sat in her patrol car writing up a complaint, Aaron said in an online report by The Tennessean.

Also shot was Lindsey's girlfriend, Danielle McDowell, who was sitting in the back of the cruiser parked at the home of her parents. Police said Lindsey also dragged McDowell out of the patrol car after shooting Marsh and pistol whipped her.

McDowell told police that Lindsey held her against her will until she escaped and was able to go to her parents.

Unknown to the officer, Lindsey drove to a nearby street, parked his car and began walking through neighbors' yard to get to the McDowell residence, Aaron said.

"Lindsey appeared suddenly armed with a pistol in each hand and began shooing into the police car," Aaron said.

Marsh fired her service pistol at least once but didn't strike Lindsey. The officer suffered several shots; two to her torso and one in the arm, and McDowell was struck in the hip, Aaron said.

Lindsey fled in his car back to where the argument started, switched out of his burgundy car into a blue Chevrolet Impala and sped away.

Officers and state troopers chased him 75 miles west to Benton County, where he was captured after wrecking his car, authorities said.

Neighbors said they were “shocked” at what happened between the normally “quiet people.”

Marsh has been with the Nashville Police Department for three years, works the midnight shift and is assigned to the north precinct.

The suspect will be returned to Nashville, where he faces multiple charges.

Suspect Led Police On Four-County Chase

Police said Lindsey led them on a chase through four counties, covering over 100 miles and up to speeds well past the limits.

They said the chase went from Interstate 40 to backroads where dozens of officers joined in, finally catching Lindsey in a pond.

“They fired several rounds at the car and the THP had a spike strip and then he eventually had to stop, then he fled on foot” said Benton County Sheriff Tony King.

Police said Lindsey climbed a fence, ran through a field and jumped into the pond.

The owner of the pond said that police asked him to get a boat so that they could go after Lindsey, but he said by the time he got his boat, officers had Lindsey on the bank of the pond.

“Just all the officers trying to persuade him to come to the shore and give up and he wasn’t coming and wanted them to come in and get him. (Lindsey said) If you want me that bad, shoot me,” King said.

Police said the suspect treaded water in the middle of the pond for a few minutes but finally gave up.

Police remained at the scene just outside of Camden searching the pond for any evidence to connect Lindsey with the crime.

Officers said that they were thankful no one else was hurt during the chase.
