I have been given my conditional job offer with LAPD, and am curious to know if anyone knows what is authorized for back up and off duty guns.

I would suggest finding a full time LAPD officer and asking him for a copy of their regulations pertaining to personal weapons. It should tell you what you can carry or at least what weapons you're not allowed to carry. Don't just go and buy something because someone says that you can carry it. If you get involved in something and the weapon is used, saying Joe Smith said this gun was OK is not going to be much help. I'm a firearms instructor with my agency and everything is spelled out in our Field Regulations Manual as to what we can and can't carry and I still have at least one person per qualification show up with something on the "bad list".
