I'm not a cop but I was wondering what your department allows you to do with your duty firearms off duty? Can you use them for home defense or do they have to be locked up? Can you carry them off duty around town? Thanks.

Your personally owned firearm is yours, to be used within the letter of the law for your personal defense. Additionally, personally owned firearms are permitted to be carried as duty arms if you qualify with them.

We are mandated to carry on duty and strongly encouraged to carry off. If you have your creds you should have you gun, badge, and a set of cuffs.

Our policy allows for personally owned fireamrs to be carried as primary,secondary/backup, and off duty carry. With proper approval and quals of course.

Any department that wants you to lock up your gun and not use it for home defense has the wrong attitude.

"carrying them off duty around town" comes with a lot of responsibility. It's no game and this is not the wild west. If you pull your gun off duty you run a high risk of being shot by other officers as well, especially in a large city.

Issued sidearms. Allowed to carry approved POWs as back-ups, off-duty and on-duty in plain clothes.

Off-duty carry of any authorized weapon is permitted and encouraged, unless the officer is drinking (then it is discouraged but not prohibited unless the officer becomes intoxicated). It is not mandated, but the officer still has a duty to act under policy, and failing to carry a weapon is no excuse.

We also have assigned take-home vehicles for all officers, which we are allowed to use off-duty for personal errands. Having an authorized handgun is required anytime you drive one, even the unmarked units.

We are supposed to have creds, radio, pistol and cuffs with us if we are within one mile of the city. Beyond one mile we can carry at our discretion.  We can carry a personally owned weapon off duty or as a backup as long as we qualify with it and carry dept issued ammo.

If you can qualify with it, you can carry it, on and off duty unless you plan on drinking alcohol or wearing a Speedo....

Speedos should not be allowed on or off duty.
