Preferably something that is NOT from the leftist view.  
Something short but with good background on the leadup and situation before the breakout of events from 1936-1939.

Mine Were of Trouble by Peter Kemp was excellent. It covers some of the lead up but it is more of a first hand account of the civil war from the Nationalist perspective.

George Orwell's " Homage to Catalonia"
is what you are looking for.
He was a leftist, but exposed how murderous the communists were and how they enabled the fascists to win.
It is a classic.
