I just got a call from a Phoenix police detective and she told me that Maricopa County Sherriff's deputies recovered a gun I reported stolen eight or nine years ago and turned it over to Phoenix. She verified my mailing address and will be sending some forms for me to fill out. I'm so excited for the return of my prodigal son. It's a Norinco SKS.

Is it a tarp? Is there any documentation I need to bring? I don't have the receipt or anything anymore. Hell, I don't even know what the serial number is now, though I obviously did when it was stolen.

Update:

I got the letter yesterday and went to pick it up, but the lady at the property division said it was still being tested. I called the detective and she said it should have been done,  but she’ll check on it and I should be able to pick it up in a couple days.

Update number two:

Called the property office today and they had it! I went to pick it up and it probably took about fifteen minutes for them to find it and run my ID, etc. It's in way better condition than I expected, actually. The bore looks immaculate, which makes me wonder what sort of "testing" they even did. The internal parts are all reasonably clean and there's not a hint of rust or pitting anywhere. It even still has the cleaning rod and the cleaning kit in the buttstock is still slathered in the oil it came with. All the numbers still match and, honestly I doubt if it has been fired. It's not Tapco fucked. The stock has just a few dings that might even have been there when I had it; it has been a while. Whatever dings there are can certainly be accounted for by police evidence lockers. This is way better than I expected. My only complaint is that some dickhead wrote "224" on the stock in black marker. That number is not in the serial number or on any paper work, so I'm not sure why it's there. Here are some pics (still getting used to the new camera, sorry), those spots that look like rust are fibers and oil:

Don't expect it to look like the same SKS you remember.

I had the SAME thing happen to me with Tempe/PHX PD.

You'll need all your I.D. and they run a NICS check just as though you were purchasing the weapon.

I had a .45 stolen out of my truck in Tempe. Reported it, thought it would be the last I ever saw of the gun.

TWO YEARS LATER I get a call from Tempe PD, they say they have my pistol, come down to the evidence locker with I.D. and I can have it back.

Seems PHX PD siezed it in a drug raid and after all the court proceedings were over they turned it over to Tempe PD, who called me.

Told the shitbird to pound sand. It will turn up eventually.

After being stolen 17 years ago? You're the most optimistic person I know......

BTW, I would have told him to pound sand too.

I'd have told the shitbird that I wouldn't press charges,  and then, when I had my gun back,  press charges.

When the police pull him over he casually starts the conversation with: "Ah, this must mean you've recovered my Telly."

My buddy got that call last year.

Someone stole a Sp101 out of his car and 3 years later the cops called him to come pick it up.

It was found buried in the dirt. All it needed was a oil bath and a new front sight.

Now think about that for a minute. How the hell did they track me down to return a bow that had been lost for years when it didnt even have a serial number. I was shocked. Admittedly it was rather funny to be walking around downtown Kansas City with a bow and some arrows. I think the locals thought I had went full psycho......
