I just got a 98 Wrangular with the 4.0L/Auto. Only after market add on is 30"x9.5 tires (factory was 225/R15), just a little on the aggressive side. 50k on the odo. What kind of gas mileage have you guys been getting with yours. City, Hwy or combined. I live in No. Minn, so there is warm-ups and long idles now, but won,t be as much in the warm season of course. Also what if any of the sensors really affect this.

My 98 Grand Cherokee has the 4.0L, 190HP, In-line 6.  I get 17-21 on average.  Of coarse the Wrangler is a lot lighter, so it may do a bit better.  Good choice on the 6cyl.  I had a 95 4-banger w/ a stick shift that was just tooo slooow, especially on the highway.

Remember, we are a brick on wheels.  My 99TJ 6 cylinder gets about 12 MPG.  That is 12 on and off the highway.  No difference in city/highway.  

I do have a 2" body lift, 4.5" RE lift, 33" SSR Swampers, 4.10 gears, 4.3 Atlas II transfer kit, winch, heavy front and rear bumpers, York onboard air, rhino'd interior, ARB front locker, Detroit rear, rocker panels, 6" extended flairs, etc etc etc.  Weight adds up.

Mine is just a little older....like the CJ's.  Anyway, my '80 = crappy gas mileage.  Tires are only 31's, but I have a carb instead of FI.  My '73 was the same way.  Jeeps are notorious for it.  Have been thinking a Vortec 350 would probably get better mileage........hmmmmmmmmmm.

'97 Cherokee Sport 4.0L 5spd here. 116k on the odometer, and I only run Mobil-1 10w30. I average 19MPG in town an 24MPG on the road. Best cruise speed for MPG effeciency seems to be 65-67, so that's where I try to keep it. Of course, all of my highway driving is work related, so the extra couple of minutes it costs me to get from A - B doesn't make much of difference :) Great truck, this is our 7th Jeep since 1985, and our second Cherokee. I will probably drive a Jeep for the rest of my life. Oh, by the way, my Cherokee is stock, stock, stock.

I have a 97 TJ 4 cylinder automatic with 30x9.5 and I get about 15 mpg sometimes a tad more with more highway miles coming in around 16 mpg. When the gas light comes on I can go 45 miles until I get nervous. It comes on with three gallons left in the tank so that works out correctly. I watch my tac with an eagle keeping the RPMs under 3000. It's like driving miss daisy but it works. Doing this I never go over 65 mph. It's nice actually, I never feel like I'm in a hurry. One problem you may be having is if your Jeep is anything like mine, when fueling up it backs up in the filler neck causing the pump to shut off way too soon. After that first auto shut off I can force in another gallon with out spilling a drop. Keep your tires aired up to around 32 psi and that helps too. Good luck.

Hmmmm, 79 Jeep Cherokee Chief with 4 wheel quadratrack got about 12 mpg new and still gets about 12 mpg. Yup sounds about right to me :)

I should have added this to my post.  If your worried about gas mileage, you shouldn't get a jeep.  They don't go together.

You could probably regear your jeep and get a little better mileage.  But it would take a long time to recoup your $ after paying for a regearing.

My 1990 Cherokee 4.0L I-6 automatic gets around 15-18. I live and work primarily in the foothills between 2,000 and 4,000 feet above sea level.

I have a 97 wrangler 4.0L (40,000 miles)and gets 15 mpg maybe a little better on the highway. I have 31 x 10.50 on it so that doesn't help any.  As someone said earlier it is shaped like a brick and lift kits and big tires make it worse.  They are at their best off road in 4WD with the top down.....I can't wait for Spring....

98 Wrangler Sport 4.0 5-spd. w/30x9.5 17-18mpg.
w/31x10.5 BFG mud terrains 14-15mpg (3.73 gears)

Still wouldn't trade it for anything.
(except maybe a flat fender)

Remember, the Wranglers (YJ's) are geared for 29 inch tires.  Anything bigger will give you a false reading on your odometer/speedometer.  

Driving down from Plattsburg with a friend, My jeep showed almost a 100 mile difference with 31 inch tires on it.

I still get close to 20 mpg with 235/75 tires back on my 92 Wrangler.

Thanks guys! I just want to know what is normal for these. I didn't buy mine for mileage either, just nice to know what to look for if it is to much of a pig. Just had the tranny serviced today, first time at 50K., works great.

You can increase your mileage by about 4MPG by:
1) Purchasing a Borla "cat-back" stainless exhaust
2) Adding a K&N airfilter
3) Using slick 50 every 15,000 miles or so.

Switching TO Mobil 1 after using regular oil WILL create oil leaks.

Mickeymike, why is that? Before I switched from Mobil 1 to regular Valvoline I noticed that I'd need a quart of oil every month.  With the regular Valvoline there's no oil loss.

I own a 1997 4L & auto. I get 18mpg tank to tank, city & hiway. But the fun factor is much much higher!!! >gg<
