Sounds like a cool cop, but just for future referance LEO stands for Law Enforcement Only. Not Law Enforcement Officer.

The deer was hung and dressed in my garage with the help of a very good friend. When we have any hanging bambi we always party! The normal party is a quarter on the barbi with lots of beer and dart games. Usualy this is in november but now we are shooting in febuary with a new friend....pat

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Pennsylvania police tend to be very professional and competant. I've yet to meet a REAL a-hole cop in Pa. (I'm sure there are a few). Had you been in Maryland, you would probably be in jail right now. I don't know on what charges and that doesn't matter - Md. cops would think of SOMETHING to charge you with, even if you were 100% in the right. All that blood would be all it took.

I don't understand what the big deal is. This is what should be expected of the police instead of a lot of the bullshit you catch on occasion. He saw something suspicious, investigated it, found it was nothing and sent you on your way, exactly what he is supposed to do.
The sad state of most of our law enforcement is only evidenced that this post actually exists. The police are praised for doing thier job and NOT being an asshole about it. Actually, I would have probably been irritated about the "clean up your truck NOW" statement. What business is it of his if you want to drive around in a bloody truck? |

Argue if you want but the fact is there is no difference. The cop could have broken it off in him. He chose to use some discretion. He could have taken a whole host of enforcement actions but he didn't. So he not only wasn't an asshole , he didn't do his job either. What do you make of that? |

In many states, a deer is the property of the state. Thus all the game laws. They can punish you for taking game out of season, they can make you pay reparations to the state for the value of the game you took illegally.
BUT, once it has been struck by a car, suddenly they don't want it. They know nothing, the see nothing. It is not theirs, they don't want anything to do with it. Because IF it were the state's deer, and it ran in front of your car, came through your windshield and killed your wife and/or kids, the state could be responsible. But once it has been struck by a car, they don't want it anymore, so it is fair game. |

here is the best kind of encounter to have with an LEO on duty and in uniform:
None. Why? Casual coversation with a cop, even one you know, could be 'filed away' and used. With hope it could be used FOR you, but, one never knows. If you are just going about your business, you don't have to speak with a cop, unless he has a VERY good reason to detain you. Remember back when people used to say, "It's a free country"? Don't take up the officer's valuable time by doing something which might attract his/her attention. Let him use that time to deal with the REAL criminals, instead of giving him/her a pretext to detain you. Lesson learned at the College of Hard Knox....... ................... I broke down once in Maryland. The cops aren't very professional. But, the worst are DC. When I was visiting DC a while back...and I got to see how criminal their cops are. I saw several cops grab some guy, throw him to the ground, and use excessive force. I asked somebody what he did (expecting to hear Armed Robbery or something). Instead it turns out he was selling w/o a permit. WTF, all that force for not paying for a proper permit ? |
