In a effort to become "greener", and save some money on my electric bill I bought some CFL bulbs today. I was installing one of them over my bed and pushed a little too hard on the end causing a small piece to break off the tip. Am I gonna die of mercury poison? Seriously though, should I just get the broken pieces up and not worry about it, or panic and throw away my bedding and call a HazMat team?

ETA: Shit, just missed it!

EATA:  Go with LED next time.  No environmental hassles, and they last 30kHr+ .   They're just a little weaker, but I can function just fine with how much they put out.

Where's the best place to buy the LED bulbs? I like the CFL as far as brightness goes, but I would love to go all LED to save some more since my electric bills have been high.

I've broken a few.   Just clean up the glass and go on with life.   You should be OK as long as you aren't licking your bed sheets. I would wash them tho.   Maybe air out the place if your super paranoid.

Opinion:  Best damn CFL's are GE Daylights.  Expensive (about $8 for 2 100w equiv..) but they are nearly pure white instead of piss yellow, and they are ALOT brighter.   Only had 2 die in 4 years.  And they died during my last move after 3 years of use.

I get mine from Sam's club and Costco.  I think Sam's Club has a pack of 3 small for 15$, which is pretty good.  They also sell candelabra LEDs, but those are really weak.

The 'hazmat' stuff is bullshit, designed to lawyer-proof the companies producing the bulbs, in the case that some lady has a mutant kid and decides to sue over a bulb she broke 5 years ago...

There is no scientific basis for that miniscule amount of mercury being a problem...

Just like the recent 'lead paint on toys' scare...

Lawyer-proofing... Nothing more, nothing less...

No kidding. I don't know why they make fun of it for being hippy-ish, when really they are just screwing themselves out of money. I would rather save money.

Yep, there's a difference between being "environmentally friendly" and being efficient.

As some have already pointed out, pick up the pieces, wash the sheets, and ventilate the room.  Problem solved.
