I though the last year for the Cherokee was 2000. Unless you meant the Grand.
I have an '88 XJ 4.0L with 391k miles. First major engine repair at 389k (head gasket). 0bama's Jeep killers will not get their hands on it. |

Had a Jeep Liberty that turned out to be too small for long distance driving so moved up to the Grand Cherokee. Was my wife's vehicle and it was fairly trouble free. There was some sort of transmission growl that was starting just prior to out trading it in on a Dodge Nitro, but the dealership couldn't find anything wrong with the tranny. The shift on the fly 4 wheel drive is really nice for the ladies. My wife couldn't put on a set of snow chains if her life depended on it nor could she figure out the Warn Hubs type lockout transfer cases. So for a gal who may run into some weather that requires 4X4 on occasion, I'd recommend any of the Jeeps. YMMV as always

I have an 01 Cherokee. Its about to turn 100K any day now. So far so good... its been running well. I got it used 2-3 years ago with 65K on the odometer. Nothing major has happened during my driving time with it.

Nope, the last year for Cherokees was 2001, but the Liberty overseas is still called the Cherokee. The only problem ive had with my '01 Cherokee was a cracked head from the previous owner, but it ran damn good for 6 months before i found out what was slowly useing my anti freeze.

I believe China still makes Cherokees. IIRC, with DANA 44s front and rear. They don't have the envronmental nazis to deal with.

For what's its worth - I don't think a Cherokee is much bigger than a XB..
01 cherokees have some issues, End of run stuff, etc blah blah. mike no likey 01 cherokees, sorry. my '94 has been a tank. |

They went with the Liberty. There was actually an on line appeal to get them to keep the live axle Cherokee. I signed it. |

You need to go to Jeepforum.com, and visit the stickies on top of the XJ forum.
Never owned a Jeep before two years ago. Bought a 1993 Jeep Cherokee 2 door, 5 speed. Now I also own a 1997 Cherokee 4 door automatic. I think the 2000 and 2001 might have had some problems with heads (aluminum) warping. Better to get a 98 or 99, I'm thinking. The warping problem is not bad, but it seems to happen more than "hardly ever." 4.0L otherwise is freakin' BULLETPROOF. Buy an XJ/Cherokee and chances are excellent that you will NOT be sorry... |

We have a 2001 Cherokee 4x4 w/ 4.0L, auto trans, bought it in 01 with 5500 miles on it..It now has 89,000 miles..Two things have happened that were $700 & $600 repair jobs, the evaporator core had to be replaced & and a door inside the dash which directs air flow for the heater / ac, this happened 3 years ago, then 2 years ago...It was the labor costs because the whole dash has to be removed..We sucked it up because it runs like a striped ape, it's paid for and even though my wife has since got another vehicle we decided to keep it..No other problems, it'll go where you want it to go.

I've got a '00 I bought new, and an '89 my Dad bought new. I love them both! They have both had typical minor issues. Cooling system can be a bit of a problem. Exhaust manifold cracked on the 89' early o when it was still under warrenty. Just make sure it has a 4.0 liter. The 89 is sitting for a future project and the 00 is my wifes daily driver.
I drive an 07 Rubicon Unlimited. It is sooooooooooooo sweet! But I sure do wish it had a 4.0 |

The little things are built like tanks. And what can go wrong is usually easy to get to and pretty cheap to fix. The motors will last a long time but if your in the South watch out for heating problems. Many go with a bigger aftermarket radiator.

4.0L is a dogshit slow boat anchor of a motor. It's reliable, that's about it.
Parents '04 GC has had numerous wiring problems, including the main wiring harness actually melting (stock routing location), and most of the door wiring (locks, windows, etc) cracking at the flex point between the door and the chassis. |

One the to consider is that the 2000 and 2001's had coil packs unlike all of the previous year 4.0 cherokees.With that said,I suggest staying with a 1999 or older.I have had 2 Cherokees a 96' and currently have a 99'.The 96' had quite a bit of stuff done to it,was lifted a lot and was offroaded just about every weekend and had no issues that couldn't be linked to be hitting crap on the trail.
My current XJ is a 99' 4.0 4wd with the selec-trac transfer case.I have done all the basic maintenance stuff and upgraded the entire cooling system(gets really hot here in Florida).They are dead ass reliable and extremely easy to work on and maintain.I don't think you can go wrong with a 4.0 Cherokee. |

Reccommended years then? Most of em older then 2000 are the best, the 2000-01s switched to a different head which is more prone to cracking and have Pre Cats  . I prefer the newer style( '97 and up), I wish I would have gotton a '99, they still have a distributor, and got the newer style air intake, plus they don't have the pre cats, and if you want to lift it the '99 should have a High Pinion front axle which is a little stronger (so ive heard) but also helps with drive shaft angles when lifted.

i had a'92 xj and have now a 2000 thay are great cars but both of mine had an oil leak at the main seal i herd it is common in mojority of xj's? you should check that area before you buy.that cost $$$$$ to fix.

Any XJ with the 4.0 is a good vehicle. Just make sure you don't get one that has been beat to crap.

If your going to do a lift and tires, consider getting aftermarket wheels with some offset. These things can get a little tippy when you lift them, ask me how I know.
This was my 2000 XJ with 4" lift on 32's.......stock wheels. 
ETA I've owned several Cherokees and GC's over the years, all with the 4.0 six. My daughter is currently driving my 04 GC while she saves for her own car. |

I currently drive a 98 with 225XXX miles on that awesome 4.0 inline 6. No major problems.... I have a rear main oil seal going bad, but so far that's the worst of it!

Mine is fine. I'd have to look, but it's at 175-200k so far. Mine is stock and pretty capable as is. I hear the lifts are less hassle if you go a few years older. Check out NAXJA for ALL the info.

So far good on my 2001 Cherokee with less than 70K. Had a '99 but I wrecked it beyond the point of economical repair, loved that one.
