Are you interested in the Winter Olympic games?

Personally, I find the Winter Olympics much less interesting than the Summer Olympics for the following reasons:

1) WAY too much coverage of figure skating.

2) Most events dominated by a handful of countries (i.e., the wealthy ones that have snow and mountains).

3) Except for the skaters and the cross-country skiers, the racing competitors are powered primarily by gravity.  

I would like to see some TV coverage of the biathlon but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I usually only watch skating during the Olympics so I'm looking forward to that.  One guy is from Fairfax VA so he is very close to me.

I'm looking forward for the young speed skater to possibly winning 4 gold medals.

I'm looking forward for the event when you lay forward on the luge type thing.

Won't be watching, no interest for one thing and the other is I have too many project's in the work's. Just don't watch that much sport's on tv.

flame me all you want, but i detest any sport with a ball ~ except soccer. ice hockey is the staple of the winter games, and now that the USSR is no more, we have seen a resurgance of other, smaller, more talented clubs hit the scene.

i'm sorry that downhill events don't impress you, but as a former competative  snowboarder, i can say that gravity is about 1% of any equation. figure skating is kind of lame, but how else would most Americans know about classicle music?

PLUS, look at the biathalon, cross country skiing (endurance, skill) with the added complexity of target shooting. has anyone here ever tried to steady a target rifle with their hearts trying to pound out of their chest, out of breath, in the ice-cold, and then skiing for another 15k, and doing it again? few if any. and it sends a great message to the nations of the world that all guns are not all bad. winter Olympics? BRING 'EM ON BABY!!!

Some of it's good, but most is boring.  I like Ice Hockey, Women's singles figure skating, and downhill skiing.

I couldn't care less about the figure skating, and I can't understand the sport.
As far as the winter olympics are concerned, if it isn't about speed, checking people into plexiglass, or (naturally) guns, I'm not interested.

Not one bit. I did not care when they were here in Atlanta; I even turned down a gig for my band at the event, and did not even consider going or watching. The games have become a joke since they let pro athletes compete, cheating is rampant. The Olympics should be for amateur/collegiate athletes only. The "games" have become a parody of themselves.

I have developed an extreme distaste and distrust of any "global" entities, like the IOC, UN, NATO, etc...

1) Wrestling (greco/roman & freestyle)

I understand that events like snowboarding and downhill skiing require great balance, vision, reflexes, timing, et cetera, but the fact remains that no matter how good you are at any of those sports, you aren't going to be doing squat until [b]after[/b] you've used some other means of locomotion to get to the top of the hill. I could not care less about the winter or summer olympics, when they get back to what the olympics are supposed to be about, I will watch, but when it is a chance for McDonalds and Coke to shill their products, I ignore them.

No.  Could not give a rat's ass less.  Won't watch ten seconds of it.  Same for the summer olympics.  Not to take anything away from any of the kids competing...but governmental influence from all countries has gotton far too strong over the decades.  First the Sovs and East Germans put "women" out there so pumped on steroids that they could beat half the men competitors in the world (Yea, I'm that old...I remember that shit during the Cold War.), now shitty little cheeseball countries like Gabon, Yemen, and France get on the IOC and do everything in their power to SCREW the Big Bad Capitalist USA...while at the same time...sticking their hands out for more of our treasure!

The ONLY olympic event I ever enjoyed at all was the 1980 hockey game between USSR Army Team A and the USA college boys.  THAT was kewl.
The rest of it is just a bunch of shit.  It is all slanted away from US because the f**king foreign judges are pre-disposed against us.  Consider that totally f**ked up B-ball game where the Russkies beat us?  SURE they did...NOT!  The refs literally GAVE the game to the Sovs.

Ever since the Olympics went pro I could careless. Thorpes family should be given his medals back!

I care to stay the hell away from SLC for the next couple of weeks.  Yesterday I was late for work and that was just because the damn torch was going through town.  Also I can't fly south without risking getting intercepted by fighters and gettting shot down, how exciting! [%|]

There might some dissension here.  Not sure I'm so happy to consider the ideas of "sport-izing" martial arts in general.  But it does give it a wide appeal.  Course TOO bad NBC won't even show those events like the ones you listed.

As for Winter Games . . . [sleep] . . .

One thing to note though.  Figure Skating men or women is NOT A SPORT dammit.

I do not think there will be coverage of the Biathlon because of the guns.  In the summer Olympics there was no coverage of any of the shooting sports.  I emailed NBC and inquired why???  I got no response.

Two names will emerge time and again during the women’s biathlon competition in Salt Lake. Sweden’s Magdalena Forsberg and Norway’s Liv Grete Skjelbreid Poiree are the two favorites in any of the individual women’s events. Forsberg is the 2001 world champion and was nearly unbeatable last year. But when she did lose, it was a good bet that Skjelbreid Poiree was on the podium in her place. The challenge for the favorites and the field will be how well they handle the altitude — the Soldier Hollow course’s highest point is 1,793 meters (5,882.5 feet) and has a base elevation of 1,670 meters (5,479 feet).

3:15 - 5:15 PM ET / 12:15 AM - 2:15 PM PT

MSNBC Biathlon: Men’s 20km individual
While Norway’s Liv Grete Skjelbreid Poiree will be battling it out in the women’s 15-kilometer individual, her husband — Rafael Poiree, the 2000-2001 World Cup champion from France — will be among the favorites in the men’s 20km individual. Others to watch include Norway’s Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, the defending Olympic champion in the 10km sprint, and Pavel Rostovtsev of Russia. In this event, each competitor stops four times at the firing range and must hit all five targets with five bullets. For each target missed, one minute is added to his total time. .

Wednesday, February 13 / Day 6

3:15 - 4:45 PM ET / 12:15 AM - 1:45 PM PT

MSNBC Biathlon: Women’s 7.5km sprint
Look for Germany to shine today in the women’s sprint. Teammates Katrin Apel, Kati Wilhelm and Ursula Disl will try to hold off Norway’s Liv Grete Skjelbreid Poiree. Apel won the bronze in Nagano and the silver at the 2000 worlds. Disl took the 1998 Olympic silver as well as the silver at the 2001 worlds. The sprint is the weakest event for Sweden’s Magdalena Forsberg. The top 60 finishers of this event qualify for the pursuit.

4 - 5 PM ET / 3 - 4 PM PT

NBC Biathlon: Men’s 10km sprint
This race could easily come down to an intrasquad battle between Norway’s Ole Einar Bjoerndalen and Frode Andresen. In Nagano, Bjoerndalen edged out Andresen for the gold. But there is a wild card this time around: reigning World Cup champion Rafael Poiree, who also could factor in the outcome. The top 60 finishers of this event qualify for the pursuit.

Saturday, February 16 / Day 9

3:20 - 4:15 PM ET / 12:20 - 1:15 PM PT

NBC Biathlon: Men’s 12.5km pursuit
Making its Olympic debut today, the 12.5-kilometer pursuit features the top 60 finishers from the sprint competition. The athletes start at intervals based on their finish in the sprint, stop four times and must hit all five targets with five bullets. For each target missed, athletes take a lap around the 150-meter penalty loop. The gold medal battle should be between Norway’s Ole Einar Bjoerndalen and France’s Rafael Poiree. Bjoerndalen won twice and finished second once in the five World Cup pursuit events he took part in during the 2000-2001 season. Poiree, meanwhile, was even more successful, winning twice and finishing second four times in the six World Cup pursuit events he entered.

4:15 - 5 PM ET / 1:15 - 2 PM PT

NBC Biathlon: Women’s 10km pursuit
The women’s 10-kilometer pursuit makes its Olympic debut today and also features the top 60 finishers from the sprint competition. Sweden’s Magdalena Forsberg is favored to win the gold. The race for the silver and bronze should be a free-for-all, with Norway’s Liv Grete Skjelbreid Poiree, France’s Corrine Niogret and Germany’s Uschi Disl in the mix.

Wednesday, February 20 / Day 13

4 - 4:30 PM ET / 3 - 3:30 PM PT

NBC Biathlon: Men’s 4x7.5km relay
There’s no secret who will be in the medal mix in this event. The former Soviet Union won the Olympic gold medal from 1968-1988 and Germany has claimed the title from 1992-1998. Norway also has been in the medal mix in Nagano in 1998 and at the 2001 World Championships. The event features four-person teams that race four 7.5-kilometer legs for a total of 30 kilometers. Each team member has two firing sequences and is allowed three extra bullets (for a total of eight) to hit five targets. For each target left standing, competitors ski a lap around the 150-meter penalty loop.



It's all in the afternoon, and only wednesday and saturday are on NBC.

Damn, wish a real sports channel would take up the olympics, not the same idiots who botched Sydney.

I was watching the opening parade, as I like to rate the countries with the hottest babes.  This year was a bit of a switch.

#1 - Germany
#2 - Australia
#3 - France

Other countries had hot babes too (Italy, and Russia, etc.), but not in quantity.  The U.S. women looked more like real athletes rather than hot babes, so they are more likely to win something.

and they mobilized over 5000 military personnel for security plus many other federal agents. All this and some terrorist can probably just get an upgraded mortar, and have a spotter sneak in with binoculars and a cell phone and barrage the site.

I would watch too if they would add paintball to the list. Paintball is a sport, figure skating is not. My biggest complaint is that almost all paintball tournaments are speedball format. There are almost no scenerio paintball format tournaments.

Here's my idea, make a new Olympics for military simulation events. Like mil sim paintball, have like an international wargames festival somewhere every 2 years. In addition, they can also add stuff like target rifle compeitions, land navigation(pathfinder) competitions, field craft competitions, and have different scenerios every time to test a blend of these skills.  

Seems much of the dissension against the olympics is because of US network coverage. There is one easy solution - get the fluck out!

This will be my second olympic games since I arrived here, and I guarantee you the coverage will kick butt compared to NBC's.

I was amazed during the last summer olympics at the coverage of sports that are never even mentioned on the US networks. Also, the annmouncers don't blabber so much - you can actually just watch the event (interstingly, when they con't blabber so much you can here, in English, the announcers at the actual event so you follow along no worse than people actuallky there).

Today I flipped between the Korean and American coverage of the opening ceremonies. The Korean coverage was far superior, as I predicted. Looks like it's gonna be a great games.

The Olympics are about martial arts, (no, not just karate), I want to see nekkid men grapple at each others oil soaked bodies (uh...ok...maybe not...) I want to see gladitorial games, where the little girl figure skating gets cleaved in half (uh...ok...well...maybe not).  Olympics?  I don't have even the slightest interest.  Sorry.
