I am no fan of the UAW......They can go fuck themselves.  I am no fan of .gov giving out $$$$ to prop up the auto industry.  But, this is just completely ridiculous!

i've never owned a "foreign" vehicle.  that will end next time it is time to buy a new car.  i will never again own a gm, dodge or ford.  gm or dodge since they sold their souls to the devil.  ford is guilty by association...uaw and all that.   next car will be a toyota or honda, and next truck will be a toyota or nissan.

A long time ago , US cars stopped being quality and started to become junk.

That isn't what the article says:

My far-in whip was built in Marysville, OH. Only the transmission came from Japan.

I've got a new Corolla and I love it. 34 city/41 highway. Extremely easy to work on too.

ETA: Cash for Clunkers is nothing more than a bailout. I think it is ironic that it is mostly going to foreign car makers.

Yeah, most foreign car companies manufacture vehicles inside the US.

US cars have seen a pretty significant increase in quality in the past few years. I have a Yukon Denali and it's a great rig. Well built, comfortable, roomy and safe. Quality hasn't been a concern for some years now...they don't make Corvairs, Vegas and Pintos anymore.

The article says 47% of the transactions under the program were with Ford, Chrysler and GM. The 4 out of 5 number is just for the top five ranking of models that people bought.

Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) –– Four of the top five models sold so far under the U.S. “cash for clunkers” program, aimed at boosting the auto industry, are made by foreign automakers, according to Transportation Department data.

Vehicles made by the three largest U.S. automakers –– General Motors Co., Ford and Chrysler Group LLC –– were fewer than half of sales under the program through Aug. 1, according to Transportation Department data obtained yesterday. The companies accounted for 47 percent of the clunkers transactions.

False.  Some "foreign" cars are assembled here.  And some of them are assembled from parts that are engineerd here.  But most of them are engineered abroad.

When you buy a "domestic" you support a vast food chain.  It isn't just about the UAW, it is about the engineers, accountants, and the restaurants and shops that are supported by them.

But none of it is as ridiculous as the vids I've seen of them destroying perfectly good cars.

Sorry (actually, no, I'm not), but when my Taco has had 1/10th the cost to fix problems with way more than the mileage that either of my S-10s had before trading out of the money pits, I'll gladly give my money to the foreign engineers.

I bought a Nissan.  Made 30 miles from me in Smyrna, TN.  I'm pretty sure that put more money into the economy of my County and State than buying a Mexican-built ford would have.

And I DID NOT use the Cash for Clunkers program.  I bought that bitch straight-up.

Capitalism?  People are free to buy products they feel are the best for the money they are spending?

Are you trying to tell people how they can or can't spend their hard-earned moneys?

Maybe if the domestic car companies wanted business, they should put out better products than their foreign competitors.  Just a thought.
