The canopy looked like a us cosair but the aircraft was longer maybe some kind of dive bomber? It was silver and had the red star on the fuselage. Can anyone give me a guess as to what kind it might have been? It was definately prop driven , one propeller on the nose.

i know of several people around the auburn/montgomery that fly YAKs from WWII. apparently the flaps and landing gear are all run by compressed air but the on board compressor either sucks or doesnt work, so they use scuba tanks.

They use the compressed air to start the engine too.

In August of 1989 I was salmon fishing on the back side of Elmendorf AFB, when two Mig 29s escorted by two F-15s flew over in the landing pattern. It was really cool!

Here is a picture and a brief article about it:

Could have been a RSPA plane.

The Red Star Pilots Association collects and flys these surplus combloc aircraft. Our local airport is one of their regular training locations.

I got tons of pics but none of them are uploaded to my web host right now.

Most of them are Yak and Mig prop planes, but they also have some jets. Mainly the L-29 Delphin and L-39 Albatros.

I'll pop a few photos onto my web host and post them in a few minutes.

I've been inside one of these. Guy at the airport asks me to guess what year it was built. I guessed 1946 or something; I think he said it was a '72. Definitely a cool plane.

I saw one of those Yank-offs perform at an airshow. The yowling and howling noises the prop makes as the plane hangs vertically, stalls and falls, and zooms out has to be heard to be believed.

It sounded weird just flying over that is what made me look. We get the cessena's and stuff alot and the cargo planes from Maxwell flying over. This one sounded way different and it was low too, like less than 300 feet low.

A little off topic but... the DC-3 pictured earlier is a friend of my brothers plane. I flew her for close to an hour before Capt'n Dan got her painted in Herpa Miniature Model colors...back on topic.

My Oldman made those Yak9s. He imported the airframe and fitted them with Allisons, tested them and sold them. His website is gone now but he ended up doing a bunch before he grew tired of the Russians stealing from him. Shadetree Aviation has a few write ups in Areoplane mags and such.

TWA was still frying DC3s for short hops in the 60s. I got to fly on one at that time. It was my first ever flight.
