Argentine Glacier Advances Despite Global Warming

Sunday, June 14, 2009

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina's Perito Moreno glacier is one of only a few ice fields worldwide that have withstood rising global temperatures.

Nourished by Andean snowmelt, the glacier constantly grows even as it spawns icebergs the size of apartment buildings into a frigid lake, maintaining a nearly perfect equilibrium since measurements began more than a century ago.

"We're not sure why this happens," said Andres Rivera, a glacialist with the Center for Scientific Studies in Valdivia, Chile. "But not all glaciers respond equally to climate change."

Viewed at a safe distance on cruise boats or the wooden observation deck just beyond the glacier's leading edge, Perito Moreno's jagged surface radiates a brilliant white in the strong Patagonian sun. Submerged sections glow deep blue.

And when the wind blows in a cloud cover, the 3-mile-wide glacier seems to glow from within as the surrounding mountains and water turn a meditative gray.

Every few years, Perito Moreno expands enough to touch a point of land across Lake Argentina, cutting the nation's largest freshwater lake in half and forming an ice dam as it presses against the shore.

The water on one side of the dam surges against the glacier, up to 200 feet above lake level, until it breaks the ice wall with a thunderous crash, drowning the applause of hundreds of tourists.

"It's like a massive building falling all of the sudden," said park ranger Javier D'Angelo, who experienced the rupture in 2008 and 1998.

The rupture is a reminder that while Perito Moreno appears to be a vast, 19-mile-long frozen river, it's a dynamic icescape that moves and cracks unexpectedly.

"The glacier has a lot of life," said Luli Gavina, who leads mini-treks across the glacier's snow fields.

Oh ok, so the rest of the glaciers and ice caps that are melting do not matter. That makes perfect sense.

I still keep trying to figure out what ended the first ice age.  Were prehistoric creatures tooling around in Hummers and other gas guzzling SUVs?

Actually most are growing, what we are seeing isn't global warming but a redistribution of moisture.  To make matters worse every year new weather stations are being put up in "heat islands" (like parking lots), so that pretty soon they won't need to cherry pick data anymore to "prove" global warming, since enough of it will come from suspect sources.

Chicago June temps are running more than 12 degrees cooler than last
year...........
The average temperature at O'Hare International Airport through Friday
has been only 59.5 degrees: nearly 7 degrees below normal and the
coldest since records there began 50 years ago.

What I mean by "Global Warming" is the green fags saying that mankind is raising the earths temp. Th earth gets and hot and cold. Cold means ice age, hot means you sweat your ass off. We are in the middle of those 2.

Or the mistake recently revealed about assuming how thick the north pole is was.

Actual measurements failed sine the equipment could not measure ice as thick as was found.

'Global warming' is OBE anyway.

It is now 'global climate change.'

Does anyone know what the temperature of the earth is supposed to be?

Ok, so there isn' t a spike in the last 100 years? I'm not saying that the temp change is necessarily caused by human activity, but the warming trend is there.

Either real or imagined, global warming is not the cause, it is the vehicle that the leftists are using to jam more control over every aspect of our lives.

Oh yeah.  I'm sure the instruments used, the standardized procedure and the record keeping in 1856 was just as accurate as it is today.

The warming trend is there. Its just all the hysteria that shits me off. We have had, from memory, a .062 degree Celsius increase this last decade. If this continues it means roughly a 1-2 degree increase in 100 years. Thats about what the IPPC  said will happen. Now why all the freakin doom and gloom over that? Why destroy economies over such a measly increase? Thats my issue with the whole thing.

The current swine flu hysteria is a glimpse into the same shit.

Global warming and cooling cycles are normal for our Earth, but these cycles are no more caused by man than is the sunrise and sunset.

Al Gore and all his disciples are the "Flat Earthers" of our time.

I'm not in on the whole global warming thing.  I do believe its fake, just another way to make money.
Besides, if all of the people that believe we arrived here by evolution,  What's the matter, You don't think we are evolving anymore???
Air conditioning is the only place I see that we have evolved.  Bunch of cry babies is what we have become.

Increases in temperature from things like volcanic activity, solar phenomena, etc...

Also, as more ice thawed, the warmer the Earth became.  This is because of less ice to reflect solar energy, more energy getting absorbed = more heat.

Its all pretty simple, actually.  The GW kooks are overpowered by their own guilt, they must find a culprit.

You hadn't heard? and they farted a lot more too. I mean man in his various stages of development has been killing the planet since he first learned how to control fire. You don't believe it just ask Al Gore the next time you see him get off his private jet.

Exactly.

I use that line all the time: "What is the Earth's CORRECT temperature?"

I usually get a blank stare.

Because they want to impose their will and guilt on everyone else.  We must 'repent' to their religion of bullshit and lies.

I always love asking hippies how the Ice Age ended because of all the man made pollution when we were still living in caves.

Or asking them Why around 5000 years ago in Northern Europe there was significant spike in termperatures that allowed easier cultivation of crops.

This video lays it out nicely.

Far from being a 'green weenie,'  I don't have any doubts that humans have had an effect on the earths enviroment.  I could point to sources that either prove or disprove theories.  But I'm not going to take an opposing stance just by pointing at a hippie and saying "I disagree because of him."

I have no problem disagreeing with an argument just because of the arguer

But that doesn't change the FACT that man made "global warming" is BS.  do humans have an affect on the global tempature?  of course, but so do cows, birds, plants and even rocks.

Pissing in the Atlantic will raise the level of the Pacific too, in theory.
