How important is it to have a sling for your rifle? I understand those ppl who use them for hunting, 3 gun, LEO work, traninig etc... but what about just a range toy?
I have slings for a AR, Garand and a few surplus slings that I could probably put on just about anything. |
|
Anything that's not a toy needs a sling, type of sling is personal preference.
Toys are their own animal, it really doesn't matter, I still find it nice to have though. |
|
I have more than enough slings, but I don't keep them on the rifles all the time.

Only the ones that need one. Exactly. If you ever have to go "hands on" it's really not tacticooool to lay your rifle right next to where you'll be rolling. |
|
I've always felt that a sling is nearly as mandatory as sights.

Not enough. The local fabric shops only have crappy webbing and plastic keepers, none of the good stuff (cotton? and steel).
I cant believe Brownells does not carry the standard .mil M16 sling. Kharn |

All but one
Tikka T3 Lite...it barely weighs anything and trying to get through heavy undergrowth makes a sling a pain in the ass. |

Rifles = Yes Shotgun = No Agree, but I do have a sling for my police Benelli. You really think more shotguns would be sold with slings. |

Rifles = Yes Shotgun = No I don't have slings on any of my shotguns. I also don't have a sling on my H.B. varmint rifle since I dont carry it very far and it really is more of a pain in the butt than a convienence. |

I have tried to have the correct sling on each of my rifles.
However, I recent binge of milsurp buying, has left a few un-slinged. |
|
Getting there, but not all. Would really like to learn to use one for marksmanship so I just bought one for that purpose.

I can't seem to find any sling swivels for my 1911. I've looked all over, too.

Who needs slings? If it's empty or jams, throw that bitch away. How can you run like a mad man if the sling is flopping around?

|
Every long gun has a sling aside from my over/under trap and skeet shotgun.

All of my rifles have a sling. Where appropriate, they have the correct military issue sling (Garand, M1 Carbine, etc).
I actually have some extra M1 and M1 Carbine web slings and Enfield web slings, just in case I find rifles to put them on. -Mark |

I have a bunch of rifles. You might be able to find one or two in the safe without a sling but that probably means I never shoot it.
My SBRs don't have slings. As far as how important I feel it is: pretty much essential. |

Rifles = Yes Shotgun = No Same here. This, but I'm thinking about putting a sling on my Turkey gun. I usually have one on my goose gun-walking back to the car with a couple 10 pound geese is easier with a slung shotgun. As far as my rifles, I have one on my Garand and my Remington 581. Haven't been able to find a "correct" sling in a condition that will match the condition of either of my Enfields and my other rimfires are classic pumps-1923 Remington model 12 and 1952 Remington model 121. No drilling for slings on them. I do have a sling for my 10/22T but rarely install it. |

All of my rifles, with the exception of a Winchester 94 and a Winchester '73 replica, have slings. I also have slings on three shotguns, but only one of them is a hunting shotgun.
|
|
Any of them that I could conceivably grab to use in just a few seconds notice has one. Both AR's, AK, suppressed .22, shotgun. My Mosins and K31 have slings because they came with slings, my Mauser, SMLE, M95, etc. don't have slings.

All my long guns that are not "toys" have military or hunting style slings that fit the weapon type. They are extremely handy and also provide a steady method to shoot offhand.

The old JC HIggins .22 semi rifle that my dad bought for $25 new with a scope had a sling that winds up in the stock but that sling gave out a long time ago. A friend gave me another of these rifles that he couldn't get to work but does have the wind up sling. I just haven't completely merged the two. I also have an old model 12 shotgun that my dad sawed off to 18 inches but it's a 16 guage and I have not fired it since I was a kid before he sawed it off about 40 years ago. No sling on that one. AK, AR, M1 Carbine and 870 bird blaster all have slings.
Oh yeah, the Wincester 73 long barrel musket in 38-40 (38 WCF) doesn't have a sling either. It was my great uncle's saddle gun. It's been about 20 years since I fired that one. Another ancient gun from an uncle is a Spencer double barrel but it's a twisted wire barrel contraption that I dare not fire so it doesn't need or have a sling. I just keep that one because it has pretty hammers. |

2 rifles and a shotgun. Looking at slings for another rifle too.

All of them. A sling is to a long arm as a holster is to a handgun.

I look at even the "toys" to be potential SHTF / TEOTWAWKI tools. Reading some of the stories (especially from the 1 ARFCOM member that posted his on the survival forum) really hit home that weapons with no sling that end up being used in real-world situations are a PITA to manage.
If I put a weapon in my collection I budget for and pick up a sling for it right away. |
|
All of my long guns have them, I only own one shotgun currently and it's certainly not a duck hunting gun, so it also has a sling. I prefer single point slings on my ARs.
