I never see any one smoking these old timey pipes any more. I suppose all the smokers have died. I think I might take it up, it looks like relaxing hobby.
What do I need to get started?

For the record, I think it would be hilarious if someone would smoke pipe tobacco out of a cheap glass one hitter or a coke can with some foil.

As I was just looking at my pipe all you need to get started is the pipe, some tobacco and a few filters. A cleaning kit wouldn't hurt either

All you need is a pipe, tamper, tobacco and a way to light it. I own a bunch of pipes.. not one is filter capable.. I hear that is popular with the newer pipes.. but smoking something that was grandpa's can be a time warp. edit for clarification |

it takes about two weeks to get your mouth "broke in" and the cake built up on your pipe before it's very enjoyable. the world record pipe smoker - that sounds bad - is from my hometown, and i started smoking a pipe at age 22 and still do it about once a month. it's not like smoking a cigar, there is a lot of technique involved. #1 is just keeping the damn thing lit.

I have a friend who chain-smokes cigars (he also dips while chain-smoking cigars), who occasionally smokes a pipe as well (yes, he's also an arfcommer). He bought me a pipe for my birthday years and years ago. I was probably in my late 20's/early 30's. For me pipe smoking is more an autumn and winter thing. I'm not sure why entirely, but I just don't seem to want to do it when the weather gets warmer. |

I do go here smokersforumsits the best place to be a pipe smoker. They even have a shooting and fishing social group. :)

I find that the experience is much different than smoking a cigar..
My grandfather smoked a pipe and when I smoke his brand the smell takes me back to being a little boy. It is like he is right there with me even though he has been dead for 14 years. I miss him and find the memories that come up very powerful. My wife hates cigars but doesn't mind my pipes. I am 34 and have been smoking a pipe for a year. I have never had any real problems keeping a pipe lit. I have bought a number of older estate pipes and once cleaned up they are very easy to maintain. I have never bought a new pipe so that might be the problem with new smokers. Pipe tobacco is very cheap compared to cigars. I have never smoked cigarettes but they appear expensive as well. I did use snuff and that wasn't cheap at all but the experience was completely different. |

My peepop still smokes a pipe at over 80 yrs of age. It smells very nice and aromatic, but he has recently developed sores that are beyond canker sores on his tongue. The doc says its from smoking a pipe since the late 1950s when peepop 'gave up' smoking; meaning cigarettes. We are working on getting him to cut down drastically, my father trying to explain the virtues of the nicotine patch, which my grandfather (if you haven't figured out what a peepop is yet), stares at as if it were a cyanide patch.

I smoke a pipe. We all gotta die sometime and I am probably more likely to die whitewater boating, scuba diving, or in a zombie attack anyway. It is not the same thing as smoking cigarettes.
I smoke irregularly with bouts of a pipe a day for weeks to none for weeks. follow that link to smokers forums and collecting pipes is addictive |

im 24 and im gonna get a pipe. D&R switched over to pipe tobacco cuts to avoid the new cig tobacco tax increase and i got some comming tomorrow. i can still stuff it into my cigs, but ive always wnated to smoke a pipe and this is as good as time as any to try it.

Every once and a blue moon I do when I'm sitting around a campfire during the colder months. Pipes that are already conditioned are easiest to smoke, but you can get a corn cob pipe for a couple dollars and they actually smoke well for a beginner pipe and to see if it's something you'd like. You'll catch a lot of flak for it being cheesy but there are those who swear by them- my grandfather smoked one occasionally even though he had some very nice pipes. A longer stem Churchwarden is a cooler smoke and preferred by some.

I enjoy pipes a great deal, as well as cigars, and used to work at a tobacconist shop.
We had plenty of college-age customers, it's a very relaxing hobby and pipes and tobacco can be fascinating to learn about. |

36, bought my first pipe at 18, about two years after picking up cigarrettes.
I've got two pipes that were carved by the 2004 female US Champion pipe smoker (Terri Weist, from Cat's Paw in Canada - runner up in 2006, third in 07 and 08). Terri's Ballerinia #1 wen't to the Pipes and Tobacco hall of fame/museum. #2 came to me.  My wife smokes a churchwarden carved by her husband Bill.

Pipe smoker here. I have a Kaywoodie sitter, a nice Weiner, and a few random pipes. I also may have a Bjarne sitter but I can't find it and I might have left it at the river.
 I don't have a favorite pipe tobacco, but recently I picked up some Mac Baren No. 8 and it's fantastic. |

My brother and I smoke pipes. It is very relaxing, and I enjoy doing it while working on projects or sitting around a campfire. It isn't that expensive to get into, and you can make pipe collecting a hobby if you want to. I am sort of a renaissance man though, I am only 26, but I smoke pipes, and shave with a safety razor.

I like Lane BCA toasted vanilla cavendish. I'm 32. Been smoking for 3 years. Very relaxing, especially with a nice tumbler of scotch. |
