The mower in question is a older Craftsman riding mower with a 18.5 intec Briggs and Stratton engine. When started, the mower does not have the ability to spin the engine thru compression but will start with a jump start from a vehicle. The battery was replaced and had the same symptoms as before the battery change.
P.S. I have repaired the mower so I know what the problem was...

Corroded/bad contacts at battery or starter, next check would be starter/ground?

Corroded/bad contacts at battery or starter, next check would be starter/ground? Cleaned the starter contacts and ground, same result... BTW there seems to be 4 parts replaced before the actual problem is found unless someone tells you what the problem is... google is your friend. |

I would have gone thru the complete cycle if I hadn't found out online about adjusting the valves. What I've heard, the standard routine is change the battery first, then the starter, then the starter relay, then the battery cables, when it's the valves all the time... |

Since all of the experts are in tonight, here is my problem. I too have a Craftsman riding mower. After I turn the key the engine will keep running for about fifteen seconds before it shuts off. Any ideas?

yep valve adjustement. had a big thread with louisiana carry on this exact same problem a few weeks ago

I have a real easy one for you guys.. I have a 1985 John Deere 330 that when i turn off the key the engine will not shut off.. It just keeps running like nothing happened...
