I believe the early AR had a slower 1 in 14 twist causing even the 55gr. bullet to tumble violently at longer ranges. Hence the catastrophic tissue damage. If I remember correctly that is [:)]

Same old myth. Yes, the original M16 had a 1:14 twist. No, that has nothing to do with the resulting wound profile.

I just watched a story of the M16 on the History channel the other night. Very interesting. I recorded it and I think I will watch it again tonight.
