If you can only spend $200-300 get an ASUS EeePC 4g surf or a Eee 901 but if you have $400 then get a Asus 1000ha |

Go with the 901 to get the Intel Atom processor. You'll be able to Skype as well with ultra-mobile PCs. For deployment I'd go with a solid state device. A HD computer may get bumped around too much. The solid state computers won't have as much memory but i you're just interested in surfing and email the EEE is very capable. |

+1 I have a Lenovo S10 and it is the nicest netbook device I have used/seen I have a EEE 701 also, but the 7" screen is too small. HP has the new Mini 1000 line, it's pretty nice also. I saw it at Costco. I still like the Lenovo S10 over the HP. SSD drives are better than regular hard drives because there is no moving parts. If I was going to travel a lot with a netbook, a SSD would be a must. If you're looking for a wi-fi device with entertainment value...why not an iPod Touch?
It is set up for wi-fi, it'll hold all your music, you can even watch movies on it. Very reasonably priced too. |

Given that the op isn't likely to be doing fluid dynamics computations, the smaller storage of the 901 shouldn't be a problem. For email, surfing, etc. the 901 is really hard to beat, especially if you get the Up Town model with the bigger battery. Hard to argue with 6-8 hours between charges. |

Are you going to be deployed where wireless internet access is available? If not, you'll probably want something with a phone modem (which rules out a lot of netbooks).

Who would burn up long distance charges from the sandbox on internet access? Most troops go to a FOB for a re-fit every couple of weeks, unless you have a cell phone that works over there you won't have a phone anywhere you don't have internet. |
