First off, I wouldn't be calling them an "Assault Rifle" that just helps out the moonbats.

If it were me, I'd buy several cheaper AR15s. You can build a 6.8spc for under $750 if you do it right, go cheap and then buy reloading gear.

I helped a similar customer recently.

NEver an AR owner and wanted the best. We got in 1 Colt Match Target AR for $1499 and sold it to him plus a $1400 ACOG.

Doesn't know shit about AR's and asked me to hold another Colt if we get one.

It's the setup I always wanted, since I lost my ARs in a tragic boating accident, and the guy doesn't know a Colt from a Century....

I would purchase a basic M-4 Profile setup with some goodies, rail, optic, 20 mags.

Then I would purchase 1000 rounds of ammo.

Then I would purchase a Dillon 550.

Then I would purchase components to reload the brass from my purchased 1000 rounds.

Does it have to be an AR?  What about a kickass precision rifle, like an HS Precision HTR or a Sako TRG?  Both of these rifles come in black

A true assault rifle is FA/select fire, I don't thing there is a FA black rifle available for $3K.
Now, I have two bushy AR's they are A2 models with the 20" bbl. They look like what I had issued to me in the mil, that's why I bought them. I like to target shoot with them, the longer the range, the better.
If you ask this board what to buy, you are going to get 100+ different answers. what type of shooting does your buddy prefer?

Blow the wad on a HK91.  If you are lucky you can get a HK scope mount, rifle and some mags for under $3K....

I would recommend doing what I did. Get a good AK, or a couple of good AKs and then stock up on as much ammo and mags as he can.

I'd go with a typical AR... think about it... all sorts of parts and upgrades already available... hell, 3g to spend? Get a 223 and a 6.8.

You're going to need much more than 3k for a good assault rifle.

Assault rifles are ILLEGAL to own unless you have a class 3 license....

But you can buy a SEMI AUTOMATIC black rifle that looks like an assault rifle, but isn't.

.223

If he's worried about what The Kenyan will do with guns, he'd be much better served with something in a common caliber. The XCR is a fine choice, and if he thinks the .223 is too wimpy, well, he can get the 7.62 conversion-they have been out about a month and a half.

Larue.  /thread

ETA:  6.5 Grendel is better than 6.8SPC, IMO - and Larue agrees.

$3000 isn't enough to buy an assault rifle. Assault rifles (NFA registered fully automatic weapons) are selling for about $10k now. Your friend will have to settle on a semi-automatic instead of an assault rifle.

1 ea LRB M14, Cal. 7.62mm, and
1 ea good quality AR (either M4 or A4 type) with a KAS rail system Cal. 5.56mm.

That way you have two rifles (both U.S. issue both past and present), in two of the most common surplus rifle calibers, and mags are cheap and plentiful, not to mention spares and accessories.

I don't care if you buy a Bushmaster, you can always buy whatever better parts you need to replace the ones that suck, if that is even the case.

If he wants a 6.8  , Barrett makes a nice one.

He has $3000 to spend .

LaRue mount and a Leupold Mark 4

He is good to go.
