My B-day is coming up in a couple weeks and I have some spare cash to spend on a new rifle. So, what would you recommend to buy for under $400 that is black, evil, and not Obama? I already have 4 AK-47's, and 2 AR-15's, so I won't be buying either of those. I don't have an AK-74 though. So, what would you suggest?

I kinda like this idea. What does a 12 gauge go for these days?

Keep saving until you have enough for something nice?

I don't get the whole, "I have $400 burning a hole in my pocket, and I gotta get rid of it quick" mentality...

Somewhat....crap shoot basically.

But not all Romy AK's are crap shoots.

In the AK world for the most part you get what you pay for.

W/ that said there are plenty of WASR2's that run just fine.  The finish may not be the best but that can easily be fixed by the owner...along w/ the wood.  Also some have canted sights but not just Romy's have this.  That's a semi easy fix if you have the right tools.

Well, if it was just money I've been saving towards a gun, it wouldn't be a problem, but, it's for my birthday present from my wife. She says "go find something you want for around this price and we'll get it." I can't just say give me the cash and I'll save it, or I would. She wants me to get a gift.

Get a couple stripped AR lowers and tuck them away for a build project down the road.  Save some more money and get the other parts later as you can afford them.  Build yourself a custom one of a kind; the way you want one.  Maybe even pay the $200 tax and build one as a proper SBR.

Buy the cleanest unissued Yugo M59/66 SKS you can find, a couple spam-cans of 7.62 x 39, and use the leftover money to take the wife someplace nice...

I thought about putting that in here....and then saw the OP's reasoning behind the $400 budget.

Maybe if the OP throws his "own" money into the pot.

If he can do that...I would definitely get the GSG MP5 .22 clone.

Well with $400 you are 2/3 of the way of building a nice AR.  If you must burn it now, get an low end AK and the ammo to feed her.
