On my lunch hour today, I'm driving past a gun store and decide to drop in. My eyes are immediately drawn to a high luster blued model 27 with old diamond grips SCHWING!!! I am please even further when I see it's a 5-screw and pre model 27. It's in excellent shape. Not mint by any means. But it's been shot very little and has a little bluing wear here and there. The grips are original and numbered to the gun. I think it was made in the mid 50's. Cash and carry baby!!!

If I'd seen that gun in California, especially if it was a 6 1/2 inch, I would do very unspeakable things to aquire it at all costs.

Devoted N-frame fanatic, reason I want a 6 1/2 inch 5 screw Pre-27?    To match this,

38/44 Outdoorsman with it's original box and grips numbered to it.  This was my grandfather's gun and the one that started everything.   This one has a double action on it so smooth it's insane, 6ish pound double action pull.

How much did you pay for it if you don't mind telling.

Oh my! That's a beauty....and in the box. Spectacular!!

Since your obviously a connoisseur of these fine weapons, here's a couple more of mine. A 1959 4 screw model 27 and a M&P Target.

I'd like to get a complete set of 1950 Target styled guns.   44spl and 45ACP for certain and if I can ever swing it one of the rare 45LCs.

But I'd be happy just getting a pre-27 and a 1950 45ACP.

As it stands now I own a 28-2, 27-2, 29-3(to be replaced by a 29-2 one day), 25-3, 25-2 with incorrectly 1950 marked barrel when it's a 1955 weight, and the 38/44 Outdoorsman.

All blued, preferably P&R, and nothing more recent than the past 20 years.   They are all shooters including the 25-3 which I picked up absolutely 100% new in it's original shipping packaging, shoots great.

Which is why I'm patient in waiting on the 1950 target models, want shooters but even if they are 1200-1400 dollar guns when I get them they will get shot.

$700

That's a steal at today's market values.    People are quickly realizing that the new S&Ws aren't the same as the historic guns, people aren't willing to pay 800-900 for a new S&W and the older guns are increasing in demand as people realise that 700-900 for the older guns is ABSOLUTELY worth it.    The days of 300-400 dollar 27s, 29s, and even 28s is coming to an end regardless of what state you live in.

I recently got a nickle 29-2 4 inch at one of the shops for 505 out the door, came with original box, original grips, a set of Pachymars and Hogues, plus 4 speed loaders.   Knowing the market I instantly bought it to hold onto it a few months figuring out whether to use it as a trade or as a resell for profit.    Wound up trading for a brand new Glock 22 and saving 100+ off of what the glock would of cost me(need the gun for training).

Very nice M&P Target.
Ed Mcgivern would approve.

Do you have any other pre-Model # Smiths?

Just a couple of break-top .32 revolvers made around 1900.

I'm not a big fan of the real long barrels, but I'd have probably bought it, too. Those look like diamond targets on it. Original? Any chance the box, dox and tools came with it?

Yep....the grips are numbered to the gun. No box or extras. Just the gun.

It's gonna be a shooter. An 8 3/8th is a lot of fun with plastic soft drink bottles at 100 yards.

What's the serial? Minus the last one or two digits, of course?

Same here.  I have a 1953 K-22 Masterpiece an old girlfriend gave me.  It shoots great.  Unfortunately something had spilled on the finish, so it needs to be re-blued.

I never find stuff like that at gunshops around here.

Of course, most of the gunshops in my area are f**king useless on a good day...

Mine was born the same year (1953, according to factory letter) and was my Grandpa's.

It is in very nice shape. What years did they make these "5-screw" pistols? BTW, very nice pistols from the above posters

Looks like 1956 or 1957 that yours was born, if you didn't already know that.

Now that is an incredible gun you have there!!! I know you'd never sell it, but if you've seen anything I have that you'd want to trade for, please let me know.

I've got a pre 27 similar to the one you bought, circa 1952, with a 6 inch barrel, in about the same condition yours is in.  Mine is out of time and needs to go back to Smith for a retime and refinish.  Fantastic revolver.....mine unfortunately is missing the original grips.   I've also got a 1960's K-22 Masterpiece in like new condition.  Sweetest shooting 22 revolver I've ever shot.
