Just found this guy on the back porch, I thought it was a grasshopper at first but it's taller and has crazier wings. I tried to pick it up to put it in my mouth get a better pic and it flew away like a dang bird.

Its a species of "space insect" that often attach themselves to space shuttles as they return to earth. Its impossible to kill with fire.

They're quite abundant in San Francisco. And as with other insects of the same species, color variations depending on habitat do occur.
