My compressor just took a dump and I am looking to replace it. I will be doing some painting in the near future and want one that will handle the job. What is required in SCFM to run a basic spray setup. By basic I mean repainting old John Deere garden tractors in my garage, nothing fancy.

7-8 scfm @50-55 psi would be pretty average for a non-HVLP gun

Oh yeah, I plan on getting it at Sears, any problems with Craftsman? I want to stay less than $300. Price snobs can kiss my ass.

thanks. I suppose you mean a standard cup gun as opposed to High Volume Low Pressure?

Any advantages to either?

yep, that's how I meant it. I prefer the standard cup as it's much more forgiving for a guy like me who only paints a couple times a year.
