This idea is truly insidious, and many valid concerns have been posted in another thread on this. O'Reilley's comments disturbed me greatly...

Anyone that has minimal hacking skills and an ID card machine can get around this, would not stop another McVeigh.

"Papers, please?"

KGB guard checkpoints

No friggin' way

Not if registration and background checks wee in place for computer equipment. and all unregistered equipment was confiscated. criminals wouldn't have a way to get them then.

Like this computer built from parts and paid for in cash? If the network uses anything but dedicated lines, it can and will be hacked.
This would be like trying to find all weapons purchased in private transactions and those purchased prior to 1968.
The ONLY way would be a nation-wide door-to-door search...

Well, the solution is quite simple.  We can -- indeed, we *must* -- close the "Computer Show Loophole."

I guess Bush recognizes that he doesn't need a civil war on top of all the other problems he already has.  Score 1 for the teeth of liberty.

How does polling 1200 people give them the right to say 70% of Americans would favor a national ID. What kind of shit is that. I polled the 20 people at work and 100% say we should bomb the shit out of Afganistan, therefore 100% of Americans support this! What a bogus pile of crap.
