Some people like to argue that a .223 round will penetrated a ballistic vest but then they say that a carbine is safer than a shotgun because .223 will not penetrate through 1/2" sheetrock.

I don't think you will find many people here who will say that .223 doesn't penetrate sheetrock. If anyone does say it, they are wrong.
What is true is that a shotgum shooting loads that are effective for home defense and .223 will BOTh go through sheetrock. .223 carbines make better weapons because they have less recoil, are more accurate, and you can carry more ammo. |

Never heard anyone say a .223 won't penetrate 1/2 inch of drywall. I know for a fact, that both 12 gauge 00 Buckshot and a .223 will penetrate through at least 4 walls, both sides. The only conclusion I draw from that is that any powerful round that will effectively stop a goblin, will also penetrate several walls. So......."Be sure of your target and what is beyond it." Sounds like some kind of "Rule".  |

Not quite. It WILL penetrate the typical sheetrock found in homes, and depending on the type of bullet, it will fragment inside the walls. Sometimes all the framents stay inside the walls, sometimes pieces exit, and sometimes the whole bullet punches through and keeps going. No guarantees, however, typical SMG rounds (9mm) tend to punch through walls more often than .223 rounds do. |

Either you're being extremely simplistic, or you're quoting simpletons. .223 has been found to have less wounding potential after penatrating such barriers then some other types of rounds. ANyone who reads the research on the subject and construes it to mean that .223 won't penatrate sheeetrock needs to look into hooked on phonics. |

I think there's a legitimate debate regarding shotgun versus carbine but the original post doesn't bring any of it into play.
The shotgun has things going for it like the fact that they are common, inexpensive and are not forbidden in certain jurisdictions where an AR might be forbidden. The fact that the shotgun seems to be more accepted in a hunting role and for other politically correct uses helps in some ways. Someone who hunts birds or shoots clays now and then and doesn’t want to spend much more on home defense can probably do a pretty good job of protecting himself with a shotgun. Some people believe early proficiency gains can be seen sooner with a shotgun, maybe because it's a bit simpler. But this sheetrock nonsense is bullshit. ETA: And when I hear a weird noise at night it's an AR carbine I am grabbing. |

I myself prefer the Carbine since it's much easier to gain rounds for it, wheras the shotgun runs out after one level.
Oh wait....we're not talking about Halo 2, are we....
