Now a about 2 years ago Cheaper than dirt was selling some that where made by Salt lake now first off where they real armor piercing ammo or not.

Next is there any places out there that still do sell this kind of ammo. I'm trying to find all the different 308 ammo that was used by military to make a little collection of them for just wall hanging only.

I remeber a while back on FNFAL.com about a place that sold the bullets only that were AP.  You needed to roll your own tho.
Ask over there.

7.62 NATO armor piercing is illegal to sell in the U.S. You can sell components and load your own. Strangely .30-06 armor piercing is legal to sell, I have several hundred rounds of it in U.S.G.I. surplus on M-1 clips. None to sell though.

i thought it was illegal to manufacture. the atf is actually bending the law, it says hand gun ammunition, or ammunition designed to be specifically used in a handgun

Thompson/Center Contender and Thompson/Center Eoncore. Those 2 hand cannons chamber almost every major non-magnum rifle cartridge. Also, the "Patriot" style pistols.

Do you know why it's legal for the 30-06 and not for the 308?

Try www.patsreloading.com  for AP bullets.  My website has a couple loads listed that use Varget and WC844.

Two or three years ago I bought a little over 200 rounds of .30-06 AP ammo from Cheaper than Dirt. They also had tracer and ball.

In .308, they had tracer and ball, no AP. As far as I know, they never had .308 AP. And if they did, they would have been breaking federal law.

All of this stuff was remanufactured from military brass and bullets.

You can buy .30 cal AP bullets at gun shows from time to time. I wouldn't load it into .308 cases. Use it in .30-06, or .300 Win Mag, or some other .300 magnum round.

Well I don't reload yet do to space I live in a small townhouse and have a 15 month old that get's in to everything. If I have to buy the bullet and then just place it in a 308 shell then thats fine by me it's just going to go in a box with the rest of the ammo to be displayed so I wont care.

it is illegal.
if you load the black tip 06 stuff onto your 308 be carefull on your loads and work up to where you want to be.  you know that darn black paint rubs right off the tip after you reload it!!!!!!!   I do not think the atf is going to go around with a magnet and check every round. they have bigger fish to fry.
if you want to get real sneaky just get a kinetic bullit puller and take a few boxes of 308 and knock the tips out re-weigh the powder to get the load you want and press the ap back in its place polish off the black and put it back in the box and who the hell would know but you. a regular rifle round will go threw a vest but if you want ap their you go!!!

Troy's got it.  Handloading AP projectiles isn't MANUFACTURING AP as you are only ASSEMBLING AP that has already been manufactured.

When the law was passed 308 was available in a handgun and 30-06 was not.
The black paint comes off easily and can be any color you want.

Maybe you should seat a bullet in an empty case. Would that still be ilegal?

I posted the law here before. It states that manufacturing the PROJECTILE for use in a .308 win round is illegal.

If you are doing it for display fake one. Take a standard FMJ round and paint the tip of the bullet black. Just do 1/3 of the bullet. While you are at it paint another red and one orange. Then you will have the 2 tracer rounds.
