First I'd like to extend a hearty hello to everyone!  I've been lurking around this site for about a year and a half now so I figured it was probably about time I signed up.  Guess I finally got bitten by the AR15.COM bug.

Just a quick first question to the rest of the Canadian members out there...

Where is the best place to buy AR's in Canada?  I know Wolverine Supplies carries the Armalite line and a place in Ontario (Ontario Sporting Supplies) can usually get Colt stuff.  Any other suppliers - preferably ones with good prices?  Thanks.

You could try www.milarm.com. They're located in Edmonton. I bought a Mini 14 from them a few years ago, and they seemed ok to deal with. The guy I dealt with did seem to have an attitude though. (show me a Canadian gun dealer that doesn't!)

Phil & Diane (P&D) out of Alberta.  You'll find them on the gun show circuit or in Canadian Access to Firearms.

Thanks for the replies guys.  I've already got two AR's (an Armalite M15A2 and a Colt LE6920).  They were purchased from the two businesses that I mentioned in my original message.  I paid about $1500 for the Armalite and about $1800 for the Colt (both NIB).  The prices seem kinda high but I figure with the exchange rate and the cost/lack of newly manufactured "prebans" in the States, I still got a good deal on them.  I was just wondering if there was anywhere where they were selling them cheaper...

By the way striker, I live on the West Coast.  If you think it's difficult finding toys out your way, try doing it on this side of the country.  Even if you do manage to locate what you want, the prices seem to be quite a bit higher out here.

Mate, I'd personally recommend John Hipwell from Wolverine (www.wolverine.com). He'll give you a good deal. I have met him personally, and he has an excellent facility, near Virden, Manitoba. When I lived in Canada, I did a lot of business with him. Now he is into Law Enforcement supply, so he may even be able to cut you a better deal with than MilArm or anyone else. Tell John that you were referred to him by Wes A, from Sydney, and then tell him I said 'hi'.

I have met Alan K from Milarm, and you are right they do have a rotten attitude. Bought an Aussie L1A1 from him in 1977 for about 350.00. Sure miss it!

That's actually a good quesion sixgun357.  I wouldn't know.  I have never seen one up here.  The only brands I have personal experience with are Colt (and most of the Colt stuff you get on the West Coast here is in postban configuration) and Armalite.  I'm actually looking for a Bushmaster stocking dealer up here to try to get one of their M4's (in semi of course).  My Colt LE6920 is nice and all but it has the 16.1" barrel and I'd like to find a carbine with the 14.5".

Scarecrow, I know how much those things go for  in the states.  I can just imagine how much they'd charge for them up here...

By the time I paid up all my LR-300 it came up to 3000$...

You need a 14.5? here http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~jhipwell/m15carbine.htm

Hello, HSLD!  My AR is actually a Bushmaster.  It's the CAR-15 type, Collapsible buttstock, 9 inch barrel.  It's fun.

Hey STRIKER, you said you have some thermold mags?  Do you know where I might be able to get some in Canada (blocked of course, and preferably in excellent to new condition)?  I've asked on another thread but I haven't gotten any serious answers.  How do they compare with the aluminum ones?  Thanks.

Of all the mags I USED to have prior to the 5rd capacity laws, I had much admiration for the British SA80 mags. They had a painted type finish, and stripped easier than the US type (i.e. the base plate came off like a SLR mag, by depressing a button).

I have since heard on the rumour net that they have been improved. As for the SA80, its shit, and always will be.

I am told that some semi SA80s were imported into Canada about 10yrs ago or so. Anyone got one? I heard they weer going for about 5,000.00 then (with SUISAT)!

Being from the Maritimes 'mailorder' seems to be the way of the shooter. I can say that my dealings with John Hipwell have been very positive and I will use him again.

Sounds like a number of people here have dealt with John Hipwell at Wolverine Supplies.  That's actually where I bought my Armalite and several spare mags from.  He's pleasant to deal with and I think he might have some of the better prices on Armalite stuff - seeing as how he's the distributor for them in Canada.

In answer to your question about the SA80 there 1feral1, I've only seen one that was owned by a Canadian.  It was around 1992 and I was at the Canadian Forces Small Arms Competition in Ontario.  One of the sales reps. (I think that was his title) from Diemaco who used to hang out with our team brought it out to the firing line with him.  It was in semi and it did have the optical sight mounted.  Apparently it WAS only one of a handfull that was imported into the country.  Wonder what ever happened to that rifle?  Bullpup stocks are considered Prohibited devices here now so I imagine it became a "Grandfathered Prohibited firearm" just like the Steyr Aug or he got rid of it altogether (it would be a shame if he did).

Hey Fis_Prod!  I guess you got tired of lurking around and not getting in on the discussions just like me?

HSLD.

Yes...I am guilty of lurking as well...sorry all..This is an excellent family and I have learned a lot. I hope I can give a little back.

Anyone know of a good source of ammo here in Canada? I am next to the Calais/St. Stephen border crossing and have been getting most of my stuff south of the border.

Regards to all

Welcome aboard, I'm also a Canuck. You really should think about emigrating. Notwithstanding healthcare, this is a great place. It's really different being in a place that actually has some pride in their history/constitution. Before I moved here, I thought all the flag waving was jingoism, but its not. Its real pride in what the founding fathers laid out AS TRUTHS...RIGHTS THAT YOU ARE BORN WITH!!! Not something their government let them have. The Second Amendment comes to mind. BP

I know how to get you down here- GET RID OF THE BORDER A free flow of people and commerce among people of a common heritage. That European Provincial mindset has to be driven from the continent before it infects all of North America. Your good manners are allowing these Socialists to drive you into the ground. How could you possibly leave the care of your very bodies to the mercy of Bureaucrats? Robot police cameras handing out tickets on the 401? 15% tax on goods and services? Aren't you sick of changing your clothes in the parking lot of the Gallaria mall in Buffalo because your taxes are to high and Tariffs on cotton goods exist? How about telling the Gov. where and how many guns you have? That sounds like a good idea- I know Canadians who have moved to Niagara just to preserve thier gun rights- RESIST RESIST RESIST

Let the western Provinces come first

Are they still handing out Restricted permits or did they take that away too?

Six, if you're referring to licenses to purchase/own Restricted Firearms (ie. AR's), then yes, they are still issuing them.  Our Possession/Acquisition licenses come in several different forms.  You can get one for just long guns (ie. bolt action), a different one that includes long guns and Restricted, one that includes long guns, restricted, and grandfathered prohibited firearms, etc... .  If it's "carry permits" that you're referring to, unless you're a LEO, or you get a special permit for work related carrying up north (mostly for geologist, etc... who need protection from bears), you can forget about thinking of applying for one 'cuz it just wont happen.
