.308 becuase of the variety of rifles available for it.

.30-06 is great but the only battle rifle in it is the M1.

.223 is not a battle rifle caliber.

I picked .308 as .223 is way to weak around if you are gonna lug something around the size and weight of a battle rifle.  Now for an assault rifle I'd pick .223.

.30-06 is only available in a Garand, and you need more oomph at longer distances than a .223

as much as I like 30.06 for a general purpose hunting round so many bullet weights avalible.

7.62 nato is a hair better for a combat cartrige does almost everything the 06 can and little less bulk.

7.62x51 does everything '06 could do in a smaller package.
