Besides... when it comes to straightwalled cartridges.. no difference in accuracy. |

Does Sig make a 220 in .40 or did you mean the 229? If you meant the .229 that is the one I would go with. For a .45 get the originial a 1911

The closest you’re going to get to a full size P220 in .40 is the P226, which is a slightly newer design with a double stack magazine.
They are very similar pistols – looking sideways from a distance they appear to be nearly identical except for the grip. Overall, (and ignoring the different cartridges involved) I’d say the newer P226 is the better pistol. Among other things, the .40 P226 has a solid milled stainless steel slide while AFAIK the P220 still uses the original folded sheet metal, carbon steel slide. I suspect both pistols are inherently equal in accuracy. However, my guess is that the P220 might be a bit more accurate due to the .45 cartridge. The .40 IMHO seems to lose a little there, possibly due to its high chamber pressure. Plenty of LEO’s carry P220’s. The P226 in .40 is a much newer pistol and I haven’t heard much about it. OTOH, the .40 P229 (which is essentially a chopped down P226) is used by the Department of Homeland Security (along with H&K’s). Around here most IDPA shooters seem to use Glocks or 1911’s. SIG’s are really fine handguns, but make no mistake, that DA/SA trigger is hard to master. For that reason, SIG’s fairly new DAK trigger system (which is similar to a Glock’s) might be worth looking at. The high bore axis also bothers some folks. |

.40 is a useless caliber.
Either shoot .45 or 9mm. I never have and never will own a .40 I own 2 P220Rs and they are awesome guns. I've never had a gun that fit my hand like my P220s. They are even more comfortable than my XDs. |

+1 A man after my own heart. I'm a 9mm or 45acp guy too. The only 40cal I have is my dept issued G22. I love my West Germany-stamped Sig P220. Dead on accurate and best-fitting gun I've held. Sig doesn't make a 40cal version of the Sig 220. You can get an aftermarket drop-in barrel for the 400 Corbon though. |

.45s the way to go; get yourself a P220R and you are good to go. Or do what i did; get yourself a P226 in 9mm, put a Surefire P114D and a 20 round SAS magazine and you are set.

Now that's just ridiculuous. I agree that I'd rather have a .45acp over a .40...but as far as picking a 9mm over .40 for self-defense, the .40 is a better round by far. If I didn't have a .45acp, I'd pick a .357 (mag or SIG...same ballistically). But don't discount the .40S&W round. |

Blah blah blah.
I own a 229 and 239. There's a fairly substantial size difference between the two, but somehow they both fit my hand very well. Not to mention, they both shoot very well, too. And yes, they are both in .40. |

The 229 is an excellent handgun, and 40 is a fine, versatile caliber for defense. If you plan on carrying the weapon concealed, I would definitely get the 229. The 220 is a great gun as well (I have one of each) but it's bigger and harder to conceal.

I carry a Sig 229 .40. It is a great gun, 100% reliable, it is accurate as hell and very controlable. The .40 is a fine cartridge.
BTW Sig doesn't make a .40 in the 220, the fullsize is the 226 |

As far as I know the P220 is only made in the .45 ACP caliber for the US market. (There have been other chamberings for the P220 in European markets...) If you want a .40 caliber Sig, the P229 or P226 are good options. The P226 has the closest ergonomics to the P220. I like my Sig P220. It is a reliable weapon. I have only seen one Sig with a problem out of the box in all the Sigs I have seen. They are good weapons. Personally I don't like the .40 caliber. I usually pack either a 9mm or a .45, usually the .45. |

My friend has the older stamp sheet metal 228, and says that seems to him that it is be a bit more accurate than the milled SS slide. Also the fold sheet metal slide has a roll pin holding the breach block in place, and could break after a tremendous amount of rounds shot. The newer blackened SS slide has a solid pin thus eliminating any possiblity of breakage. |

If I could only have one, I'd rather have 12+1 rounds of .40 in a 229 than 8+1 rounds of .45 in a 220.
Thank God I can have more than one. I have a 220 stainless, a couple 229s with .40 and .357SIG barrels, a 239 in .357SIG, and a 226 in 9mm. They're all excellent guns. Mine have all been way more accurate than I am, and 100% reliable. The 220's as good a full-sze .45 as I've ever shot, but it's big and heavy. The 239 is great for concealed carry, but it has a relatively small magazine capacity (especially compared to the 17+1 that you can get with a 9mm 226). The 229s are probably my favorites. They seem to have the best balance of power, capacity and compactness. But what the hell do I know? I usually carry a KelTec P3AT (if I carry anything at all). |

Not precisely accurate. As long as people buy .40s there will be bullets for 10mm 10mm, the raison d’être for the .40 cal.

Nope, SIG now uses a miled slide on all their handguns.
Ballistics experts disagree. There's nothing 9mm cant do that .40/.357SIG can.
There was a .38Super and 9mm offering here in the US. US mag release instead of that goofy ass heel type mag release.
All SIG P228s have stamped slides. They never made one with a milled slide, and now the never will. The P229 has a milled slide. That slide breaking story is utter bullshit. My P228 has just over 10,000 rounds in its short life, and I know of two other P228s that have over 50,000 rounds through them with out any breakges.
I couldnt agree more. The SP 2009s, SP 2340s, and the newer SP 2022s are excellent handguns, but they seem to me atleast, to be very underated in the gun community. They are lightweight, accurate, reliable. A winning combination IMHO. I'd like to have a SP 2022 in 9mm soon. |

Found out last week that my local PD switched recently from the 9mm to the .45 acp for some reason. I didn't get a chance to ask the officer why, though. And no, it wasn't because he'd pulled me over.

I own both a 229 in .40 and a 220 in .45. I like both. It comes down to which fits your hand better. Smaller hand work well with the 220 single stack.
I plan to use the 229 for my CCW and the 220 lives next to my bed since it has night sights. |

The research shows that the "fo-tay" only out-performs the 9mm on paper. In the real world, the two are neck and neck with a very slight edge going to the .40 in months nov, dec, jan, and feb (heavy winter clothing being the culprit, I assume).
.357 Sig, 10mm, and .45ACP... consistantly the top "performers" in auto-loaders. Otherwise, the .357 Magnum is STILL the top dog for hand gun cartidges. |
