When I first came to this site I involved myself with many Anti-Brit theads to my peril. Trying to defend myself and my Nation.

You Americans can be very patriotic and passionate about your Country. And good for you guys.
But there are so many who are ignorant to the British ways....

I was very ignorant to the gun laws in America...so I started a thread where people from different states informed me about their laws. It appears there are some states in America with "worse" guns laws than the UK.

Yet whenever I posted in a thread I was almost always followed by a comment about gun laws banning all guns in the UK. I spent many posts trying to educate people to the facts that not all guns are banned in the UK and that there is a strong shooting community anyway. But time passed and I got to the point where it was worthless trying to explain our gun laws when people already (incorrectly) knew better.

I've seen a few threads lately asking what the Europeans think of the Americans...
I was so tempted to post but thought better of it...It was asking for a flame war on an American site...by people who realy wanted to know a European view on something where Europeans could expect a flaming for whatever they said. So no Europeans posted in that particular thread.

I've met some great people on this site. Some of who I have met and others who I have not met but I've forged a friendship with great Americans.

I lost family in the 1st WW and the WW2 my father saw service in Aden/Germany/Falklands
I kept UK military jets in the sky with pride. Lost a second cousin in the London train Bombings.

I am an American Ally

You guys freely take the piss about the UK here on your site but if I were to disagree with an American policy openly then I'd be seen as un-patriotic and fair game for a flame war.

I groan when I see how Americans are portrayed on the BBC, but then I remember that our social import/export business does not show the best side of either country.  And American tourists can be amazingly dense.

I can't imagine the day that USA and GBR will not be each others' most important allies.  We need more discussion between our people, not less.  Perhaps I will come visit the UK forum as you suggested.

Anyway, i dont know what it's like in Britain but AMericans especially "Right wingers" tend to be Xenophobic and thinking that the edge of the world ends in Canada and Mexico. Beyond that ? "here lies Dragons" Give them an "in" and they will say all kinds of things. Moreso when they see a country as "socialist" and gungrabbing! To them America could become like Britain since they are our closest living relative, besides Canada. So they tend to lash out.

First off, it is well known that GD is fountain of idiocy. Everything gets bashed in GD (except for Muslims who are protected). The Brits have probably had it easy compared to Cops, Christians, Atheists, Californians, Liberals, Mexicans or French. No one is safe in GD, and most of the opinions that you read are horseshit. Don't read into anything too much. You'll give yourself an anurism.

I wouldn't say there are ALOT of states with worse gun laws than the UK.  But I can never get a straight clear answer on what the gun laws actually are in the UK either.

Heres what I think I know, correct me where I'm wrong:

You can't own anything semi-auto above .22 caliber.  Owning any guns requires a license and to get the license you have to be a member of a gun club for a certain period of time.  Something about you have to keep the gun at the club or something.

I spent 6 weeks in England.  I'm quite fond of the place... except for London.  The folks there are generally nuts.  Cornwall has to be one of the finest places with the most wonderful folks I've ever met.


With that said, who doesn't like the give the Limeys a good ribbing?  It was practically a hobby for each of us to make fun of each others' countries while I was there.


I think a big issue on the site, and I may be wrong, is that some tongue-in-cheek remarks are taken at face value because you can't always convey or understand various sentiments through text alone.

For instance, TRH's comment above could be construed in a variety of ways even though we know it was all in good fun.

So lighten up... go buy a pack of your $10 smokes, grab some Blackthorn, and relax.

I am friends with Vito113 aka Andy, find it sad that he got run off.   He always gave a good scoop on things over in the British MOD especially the Royal Navy.    I am hoping one of these days to take a trip over the pond and buy him a pint then take a trip to Duxford to look at all the WWII goodies.

Thank you for your kind words. There are too many posts here for me to respond to. I'll not beg Andy to return....his decision is his decision.....I just found it sad so many Americans thought it cool to diss him. He is a very well connected guy and has the most up-to date information available out there.

Here is how you should think of it.  Here in the states we make fun each other and bash each others states for being hillbillies or yuppies and such.  We kind of think that you are from a state called England and treat you the same.  Your liberals are not that much different than our liberals and your crappy gun laws are not that much worse than some of our states laws.  We are a family, we bicker and poke fun at each other, that is what we do. Most don't do it with ill will, though some are just jerks.  We need diversity not isolationism.

Well.....I'm on the site fairly often but I missed the bashing.  Anyways, I like the Brits a lot and see GB as our closest ally by far.  Hope that too much damage wasn't done and that you continue to visit and post on the site.
