Whether it be pistol, rifle, or shotgun...name your poison.

I've traditionally depended on .45acp, but leaning real hard towards .223 lately.

Name your poison.

most of the time it's 12 gauge...  remington managed recoil 00 buck or remington express 00,0, or #4 buck.  it mostly depends on what i have on hand.

i've also been known to keep an m4 by the bed.  when i do, it's loaded with black hills 55 gr FMJ or 52 gr HP rounds.

No need to have fixed it.

Indeed.  We've been over this.  Racking a shotgun + intruder in your house = bullet magnet

As for me, refer to screenname.  I like to keep a hand free for a phone, light, etc.

A few years ago i had to work out of town,My wife called and asked how to load a pistol because someone was outside the house.I told her to take the Mossy 500 which was already loaded but not chambered to the front door and "rack" it, As she did this she heard voices one of them saying lets get the f**k outta here. Everybody knows the sound of a shotgun slide.

.357 jhp in my 686 or 870 with a couple rounds of 00 buck and a couple slugs. Too close to the neighbors for the M4, but it's out if I want it.

My first line of defense is .32 ACP, for the simple fact that I always have it with me.  I'll unload it if needed   on the way to get something more appropriate, 40 cal Glock, M4gery, Winchester 12 gauge Defender, etc, etc.  If I'm in bed or sitting at the computer then we'll start with the Glock and move up.  No lack of choices around the Pig household!

You sent your wife to the door to make a "shotgun noise"?

Perhaps you ought to consider that doors are concealment, not cover.

Whatever is closest. I have full masonry walls so I am not worried about over penetration. 5.56, 7.62x39, 7.62x54R, 30-06, 8mm Mauser, 12 gauge, all would work for me.

You don't get the slide noise if it's already loaded. Mine stays loaded 24/7 and everyone in the house knows how to use it, except the dogs, they bite fine on their own.

OP I would never send my wife to the door to make"shotgun sounds". But that being said hind sight being 20/20 I should have had her barricade herself in the back bedroom but when someone calls you in a panic sometimes your brain tells you that she should make sure the doors are locked and windows secure.
And as your on the phone and she's checking the house she says someones trying the front door you tell her to put a round in the chamber or"rack it".I gave the abridged edition so as not to hijack.Bottom line is you do what you think is right at the time even if it isnt the best advice.
You have made certain that I will tell my stories more eloquently in the future.

I certainly didn't mean to critisize your response.  You did the best you could at the time.

I was just reminding you (and others) that a door won't stop bullets.  In either direction.

Thanks, though it is not "tactical" I feel pretty well armed with it.
After a BOT reading, I switched from FMJ to JSP.
I had not realized that .30 carbine came in JSP, and I was overjoyed to make the switch.

12 gauge.  My mossy cost me $250 bucks and it stays under the bed.  Not going to be too heartbroken if someone takes it.  Hopefully they will count their blessings and leave the gun locker alone.  I'm much more concerned with theft than with someone breaking in while I am there.  If I ever feel more threatened, or see suspicious people around I will get out the M4gery with the EoTech.

Living in the country, my AR makes me comfortable with my choice.

I'm far from help and the 30 round mag cap. and easy reloading
is a plus.

Long range capabilities helps with all kinds of varmits and the optic choices
along with the lighting options make it all around the best choice for me
and my situation.
