I remember my dad mentioning... I think it was the F105s... they would land on an airfield, and chop it right there.  Sad demise for such wonderful machines.

Argument in favour of not invading Iran. Would be a shame to shoot down the last in-service Tomcats.

Then again, it's probably a pretty decent way for them to go.

that's not necessarily the case.  if it's still a combat viable aircraft they winterize it and stick it out in the yard.  if we need it, it will be re-furbed and flown away.

look at davis-monthan on google earth.  REALLY cool to see.

not all the jets that land there get the chop

Hopefully at least a few will be put on static display or in museums.

They are indeed. They had been attrited down to just one squadron for a while, but they've basically had twenty-five years to reverse engineer the things, so they've been able to make spare parts and are back up to about two squadrons now.

They've got at least five flying from the recent videos I've seen.
Nothing but target drones against current generation AWACS, radar and missiles.

Loved the tribute to the F-14 vid. First Cap dead, now this. San Diego,1986. Tanned, beautiful ladies on the beach, and F-14s from Miramar screaming overhead. Doesn't get any better than that!

I had the pleasure of being TDY for a few weeks at Davis-Monthan back in 1991 and I got to see the planes that they keep stockpiled there.  It is indeed an awesome sight to see.  Google Earth shows the planes, but it doesn't do the actual scene justice.

The History Channel did a real good show on Davis Mountain a while back.  Alot stuff there is stored for a long time before it gets chopped.  Still, I hate to see the F14 go.

This would actually be a good idea, but locate near a base/airport. An idea. get a large jet(727/DC-8/L1011) turn it into a bar near the airport, and cater to airline employees/airplane freaks).and watch the $$$ fly in.

I was at the Lone Star Biker Bash last year at the Texas Motorspeedway.  There was an air show going on the same weekend.

Some F-14 driver decided that it would be fun to buzz the rally.

My heart skipped a beat and several thousand bikers spilled their beer!

It put a smile on my face.
