just wondering - whats the highest youve seen here in the states?

Over 10%, but 8.1 is about double what "normal" beer is. Still nothing compared to whiskey or the like though....

depends on the state, I think nevada is like 7.5 and wy where i grew up is like 6.5

EKU 28 is some crazy shit--if you can stomach 2, your wrecked.

the highest legal limit for regular beer is 15% or so IIRC. Anything else higher is considered to be fortifed and subject to a higher tax like a liquer.
Your typical lite beer is about 3.5-5% Your typical microbrew is around 6-9% And specialty micros are 9-14% ( |

3-4% are mainstream brews like Bud made for states that restrict beer with stronger content, like Utah.
5% or so is normal lager beer. 6% is either "ice" beer, or a microbrew 7% is getting up there, few styles normally have that content. That like malt liquor, and some micros. 8% ok, at this point, this style was intentionally crafted for high alcohol content. Steel Reserve and such, for poor people who want to get wasted on a shoestring. 9-12% now it changes and becomes exclusively micro brew territory, presumably because for beers this strong, it takes a lot of ingredients and knowledge, and the market for beers of this strength is small. These are expensive brews, styles are mainly barleywines, winter seasonal beers, and Russian imperial stouts. |

WELL RIGHT NOW IM WORKING on my 3rd a/b hurricane high gravity @ 8.1% and im definatley feeling it. FYI i weigh in at 250 lbs.....

Used to be any beer over 3.9% in CA had to be called malt liquor. Also in Colorado it may still be that 3.2% is the only kind you can buy on Sunday. It still was like that in 2002 IIRC.

Well with a little crarfting I can get 10-12% .
With wine I can get 20 % . But at the Alocohol I lose flavor. |

i had a stressfull WEEK and i had to grab 6 hurricanes asap after work on friday. believe it or not i deliver beer for a living and when i break a case open and smell the brew it drives me CRAZY. |

i'm d rinking 8.1% steel reserve taste good to me and i'm not poor and this is utah where the norm is 3.2% so to me this is like a luxury and i'm starting to get a little fucked up and just dipatched a sober person for more beer so i can get a lot fucked up and have enough left to get through the bristol race on sunday when the state liquer stores are closed

Or people who like to taste their beer. Lots of malt makes lots of alcohol. Stones Arrogant Bastard, many Micro brewed IPAs and APAs inhabit this area. Also many imports that taste good, think Chimay. $30 to 90 a case isn't a cheap buzz.
Also Imperial IPA's, some Belgian Trippels and Quadruppels. |

Try it. DAMN good stuff. If you weren't scared off by how strong their pale ale is, I think you'll be pleasently suprised by the Bigfoot. Albiet not in the same vien, it's still very drinkable. |

dogfish head 120 minute IPA has between 20 and 22% ABV. i haven't had it but a beer restaurant here in richmond has it and i've heard it's really good. they limit you to one though.

It appears that I can't get beer stronger than about 8% in Oregon. That's crap.
Go to the Samuel Adams website and check out how many states Millenium, Triple Bock and Utopia are banned in. Hell, I have to go at least 300 miles to get any of them. Goddamn OLCC (Oregon Liquor Control Commision) ! |

I've had 4 of those, no not in one sitting. Got two from one friend and then two from another. It is very good if you like IIPA's. The funny thing is you can drink the first one quite fast, it doesn't have an overpowering alcohol taste. By the time you get into the middle of the second bottle, the first one is beginning to kick your ass. A few of us have said we'd like to go in on a case and see how many we could drink before the conversation turned completely unintelligible and pointless. |

That's the deal with where I live, so I make my own beer. It is better and cheaper than any commercial beer that I have ever had. |

FWIW, Barley Wine is a beer that gets FAR better with age. I brewed some barley wine early this winter, and I won't drink it until Summer. If I were to wait a couple of years, it would be even better. |

Depends on the brewmaster, the way it's brewed, the ingredients, the yeast, the fermentation temp, etc. It could be as low as 9%, as I said above I've had Dogfishhead 120 Minute IPA (20%ABV) and it was fantasic. I've had a few at half that that were terrible. |
