I am real close to buying a toyota Tacoma crew cab. The reason I want it is because it will fit the family and I thought it would get better mileage than they do. About 20 mpg average.

Question...What kind of mileage are you guys getting with your Ford Diesels.

You might want to reconsider, there are better diesel motors out there.....

Kodiak diesel = 12 to the gallon

m998 w/ a Detroit Diesel Alison = 14 to the gallon under 40MPH.

If you plan to stick with the Ford's get a bigger truck (f650 pickup) with the Caterpillar motor.

Toyo's are okay too but they are gassers only? and gassers suck... imho....

I usually get 18 all around & 19-20 is pretty average on the highway.

'02 superduty, PSD, Supercab, F350 4x2, single rear, 6 speed
Completely stock.

A Ford F250 my dads diesel gets 15 mpg city millage but its a 2002. If you put a exhaust, chip and intake you should get 17-18 mpg easy with an older truck.

A friend who keeps his pedal to the floor and does over 95 mph daily gets 16 mpg, and he also always is towing heavy trailors and lots of weight behind his truck at those speeds. If you drive at a normal pace you should do good on diesel.


I like emm beter then Chevys or Dodges. As for the Tacoma you can screw up the frame on it from getting in a wreck at 15 mph. I like emm but they arent very heavy duty. Gas millage is only around 15 mpg on them last time I checked, although newer ones might have changed.


I'd go with the Ford... IMO I think they are the sturdiest frame and safest if you get in a wreck. Many argue that the Chevys engine is better but my dads f250 and many people I knows F250-F350s have never ever given them any trouble they simply mantinence the engines regularly.




Also, if SHTF and you need to sleep in your truck you can leave it running all night long w/o any problems. And my friend has a 99 F350 thats pushing 350K miles and still ticking.

I've got an "05" F250 2WD and the mileage is only about 16-17.  The "01" Dodge Cummins I traded always got 18-20.  I do need to take mine in for a recall computer reflash.  Maybe it'll help on the mileage.

Bite the bullit and buy the Ford.
More room, engineered for americans.
I don't own own one at this time.
But one one of  my men I sent to NY to bring back equiptment, F250 super duty diesel camper shell and a 20 foot trailer AVG 20mpg at 80mph.
The Load calc'd about 4500 lbs. and milage was figured as a aveage.
The maintaince cost is higher on the deisel but the interval is higher it works out.
The Tocoma works now how about in two years?
The engineering of all the Non Ford/Dodge/ Chevy's I drive (and I drive about 100,000 a year) .
Are for the non US drivers of 5 foot or less.
If you are over that height I suggest stepping back and  looking.
How Tall are the KIds?
Approching that height?
Do what them bitching about the room?

Big difference between the 7.3 and the 6.0...  

I doubt you will ever see above 15 with your 7.3 and 35's

I drive my trucks with a 5th wheeler or a trailer attached to it... :D

And Ford's biger trucks f650 "pickups" have several engine's, namely...

Ford's own powerstroke = good

Cummins = better

Caterpillar = best ( 15k extra)

WG, I can let you try a tuner on the PSD and you'll get better mileage and more power.

Last batch I sold they went for $330.00, Superchips 1704 or 5's I think they were.

I got one for my neighbor, he has the 6.0, the truck is just like yours (xcab 4WD SB)and with no other changes it'll chirp 2nd!!

I hear you, but why stop there? Might as well grab a class 8 with a 600hp CAT. I'm also a fan of CAT as my stock is growing like herpes on a Chinese whore.

Also mine is chipped with a TS Performance 6 position toggle and the mileage is what I stated. I calculate the mileage at full fuel (no foam, topped off) as the overhead console thinks I'm getting around 22 mpg.

My company has many Ford Diesel trucks and vans. We have one that is an 89 model with over 650,000 miles on it and not a single engine problem. The only reason we still use it is to see how far it will go.

We do all of the maintenence.

We use all synthetic fluids.

It gets about 14 to 16 MPG.

We have put 4 transmissions in it.

Our opinion is Ford makes one hell of a Diesel engine.

There customer service sucks. It is the worst. I have never seen a company treat there customers as bad as Ford.

We switched to Chevy.

My 06 Duramax is getting 18mpg right now at only 8k miles. Should be getting better as I pack on more miles. Ford diesels are also terrific as miy friend has a F350 powerstroke. It's a little bigger than my Duramx all around and the bugs in the international motor seems to have been worked out in the previous years.

The aftermarket stuff can really help mileage.  I bought a used dodge with some banks aftermarket stuff and the highway mileage is astounding for a dually 4 door pickup.  The computer says 24 mpg and real world calculator says right under 20mpg.  But geared the way this thing is I do the speed limit since going close to 80mph or more spins the engine up and drinks the fuel down.

As far as bio-diesel goes, run several searches to learn about what road tax you should pay if you produce a fuel to use on the roads.  Most importantly start learning if anyone running bio-diesel has had to pay the stiff fines that are in place for such a crime.

Overall if looking at brand new ford I would think about waiting for the new version that is going to come out.

I went looking at brand new dodges but could not find what I wanted so I bought an 03 that someone traded in to a dealer.

I would recommend the 2006 half ton Silverado Z71 with the 3.42 gears.  Gets just barely over 20mpg highway and the gears are not too tall for daily driving.  Don't buy a Toyota.  

ETA:  There is a dual-fuel option on the 5.3 with no loss of performance.  Burn 85% ethanol and give the middle finger to "big oil".  Hahaahaa.

Just because it burns diesel does not mean extended idling is ok.
[Also, if SHTF and you need to sleep in your truck you can leave it running all night long w/o any problems. ]
Long haul engines have provisions for extended idle periods.

Cummins is the go to powerplant from my experience.  Don't buy new as they are not getting the mileage that they did a few years back.  A Dodge extra cab 4x4 in the 99 to 01 range with the 3.55 gears and a stick should yield you good mileage.  Perhaps older...

Just don't buy new on the Dodge.

But, seriously buy a 5.3 dual-fuel Silverado over a Tacoma.  You will always wish you had more truck with the Tacoma.

2004 F250 Crew Cab (4 door) Short Bed (6.5 foot bed length) 6.0 Liter Power Stroke diesel with the TorqShift automatic transmission. The Power Stroke diesel is manufactured by Navistar, part of International Trucks. International has been the manufacturer of the Power Stroke for years. International Trucks is Fords supplier of light duty truck diesel engines. Ford does install other manufacturers diesel engines into their chassis, I think starting at the F450 model level.

My fuel mileage so far has been:
17mpg with cruise set to between 65-68mph with the tachometer turning 1800rpm.
19mpg on a 5 hour cruise to northwest Pennsylvania from southeast Pennsylvania.

The 6.0 liter Power Stroke came out in the middle of the 2003 model year. Many problems. Many buybacks from Ford. 2004 model year updated many things on the engine. Some trucks still had problems. 2005 and 2006 models got several tweaks also. Even these 2005 and 2006 models have some problems but not like the 2003 or some 2004 models.

Ford has released several recalls for the 6.0 liter Power Strokes, mainly the 2004 model years for wire harness damage. Ford has released many ECM updates over the years. One of the most recent for the late??? and early 2004 units is to reprogram the ECM's to ignore the exhaust pressure sensor which was designed to help the ECM control the variable turbo-charger and the EGR valve.

The EGR valves on the 6.0 liter Power Strokes are known to carbon up badly causing driveability problems. The new computer strategies that Ford has released under recall or TSB bulletins are designed to remedy or slow down the accumulation of carbon deposits causing the valves to stick. (Rumor has it that the new International engine to be placed into the Super Duty trucks is a punched out 6.0 liter Power Stroke equaling 6.4 liters and has at least  4 EGR valves and a dual turbo-charger set-up. One small turbo feeding a larger turbo. This new engines sister can be seen in Fords LCF trucks (Low Cab Forward).

Ford sells a lot more trucks than the other two. Plugging in some numbers (sorry no confirmed numbers) Ford would neccessarily have more problem trucks due to the volume of units sold.

2007 model year will see new tighter emissions regulations that must be met by all diesel manufacturers, including the class 8 trucks (truck tractors or tractor/trailers). Have read that a lot of trucking companies are out buying en mass as many 2006 model year truck tractors to squeak in under the new emissions regs. Most trucking companies are heard not to want to be the beta tester guinea pigs on the new engines, instead waiting for others to be the live testers and help the manufacturers finally work the bugs out during real world R&D on the new tighter emission engines.

Rumor has it that once the new diesel engine emission regulations need to be met we will see other manufacturers products brought into this country that have diesel engines.

Would I buy another Ford Super Duty with the Power Stroke diesel. In a heartbeat.

Well, mine is the 7.3L and I'm pretty happy with it in stock form. Besides, after making the monthly payment, I've got little money left over for goodies.

The new ('03.5, '04, '05, '06) Dodges are MUCH better trucks all-around than any that came before them. If Dodge is going to be the truck, get a newer one.

Actually, the short bed is 6'9" from stem to stern. The alternative engines are options only in the F650 and F750.

Yes, the new "Powerstroke" will debut in MY '07 (or '08, depending on who you talk to). The new V-6 Powerstroke is 4.5L (275 cubic inches).

Agreed. My truck has been solid. Aside from the 6.0L engine issues, Ford does make the best heavy pickups, bar none.

Yes and no.....  the 3rd generation Dodges  are light years ahead of 2nd generation Dodges in terms of everything but the fuel mileage.   However, the "power wars" between the Dodge, Chevy and Ford combined with emissions requirements  have screwed me to the tune of a 6-8mpg difference between my '98 and my '05.

the truck only has 3300 miles on it so the motor isnt broken in, when im not towing too much and idling it too much im probably getting 16MPG but it will get even better when the motor is broken in

Except for the color and the mileage (I've only got 1850 miles on it) I've got the same truck.  Love my Ford PSD!
