Nice, THE  mother of all buck shot loads.

The US Army is responding by developing a new 120mm canister round, the XM1028, to arm its M1 Abrams tanks. The round, developed in response to a warfighting requirement issued by US Forces Korea in January 1999, is optimized for use against dismounted infantry operating in an urban environment or forested areas. The threshold engagement range is 200-500m, with an objective of 100-700m. The requirement is to defeat 50% of an advancing 10-man squad with one shot, and 50% of a platoon with two shots.

The XM1028 is a 'shotgun' round, with no fuze, in order to keep the cost as low as possible. It contains more than 1,150 tungsten balls (replacing the earlier steel pellets), each approximately 10mm in diameter, in a plastic canister

Yes Tuukka. Just think of how Task Force Rangers' experience in Mogadishu could have been different with some of those! Of course, the ground commanders had requested armor, in compliance with 70 or so years of experience in pacifying urban areas, and Les Aspin turned them down because that might have given the appearance that we were intensifying our involvement over there.

I'd like to see him charged with 18 counts of negligent homicide. But then, I'm an extremist about things like that sometimes.

Natick is additionally collaborating with Rafael on the Israeli organization's Wall Breaching Standoff Munition (WBSM), which is intended to punch a hole of approximately 1m diameter in walls up to three bricks thick. The WBSM round weighs 3.5kg and is effective over ranges of 25-40m. At present it involves a tripod-launched rocket, although the design is expected to evolve into a shoulder-launched munition. Evaluations began in May 2001.

Training and the development of TTPs formed an important part of the MOUT ACTD. Instead of using blank rounds operating in conjunction with MILES laser-based training systems, Simunitions - non-lethal blunt training rounds filled with soap and dye - showed several advantages. Soldiers could train force-on-force while trying to avoid getting hit with a bullet they could feel, and the use of Simunitions significantly improved close-quarters marksmanship.

Dismounted infantry firing rocket-propelled grenades over comparatively short ranges, especially in complex environments such as city streets, can severely disrupt operations by even the heaviest armored forces. During the most recent conflict in Chechnya, for example, the Russian Army lost an entire tank battalion to such weapons in a single engagement.
